The mother of a four-year-old girl who died in Palermo under suspicion of diphtheria has accused doctors of being incompetent, according to reports. The woman had previously posted on her Facebook profile criticizing medical professionals, but the page has since been made private and the controversial post removed. Earlier, she wrote that the doctors had underestimated her daughter, and urged others to avoid physicians who had failed her child. She described the doctors as "incompetent," stating they had "destroyed the life of my daughter and that of us parents." Her post included photos with her children and expressed love for them, saying they were her "only reason for living." The incident has sparked an urgent public health response. Professor Antonio Cascio, director of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Palermo’s Policlinico, emphasized the importance of identifying the "patient zero", the individual who may have initially transmitted the infection. He suggested there could be a healthy carrier among family members or acquaintances who unknowingly infected the child. Cascio explained that contact tracing efforts are underway, including testing and prophylactic measures such as antibiotics for those exposed. Those who came into contact with the child must verify their vaccination status and get updated if necessary. The local health authority, Asp di Palermo, has conducted swabs on much of the family of the deceased girl, named Anna Rosa. A group of around twenty family members visited vaccination centers this morning to receive the hexavalent vaccine. The three siblings of the deceased had already received their initial vaccinations. Meanwhile, the child's cousin, who was hospitalized after showing symptoms, is currently in stable condition. According to Domenico Cipolla, director of the health services at the Children’s Hospital, the cousin has mild symptoms typical of an influenza-like illness. He noted that the boy is vaccinated and that the disease should not progress to severe forms. Results from his test will be available in 48 hours. The death of the young girl has raised concerns about diphtheria resurgence in Italy. If confirmed by the National Institute of Health, it would mark the first case of diphtheria-related death in the country since 1991.
