A four-year-old boy who is a cousin of Anna Rosa, the child who died in Palermo from suspected diphtheria, has tested positive for the disease and is under isolation at the hospital for children. The boy, who had similar symptoms to his cousin, has shown a milder form of the illness, according to Domenico Cipolla, director of the health facility Arnas Civico. He explained that the child's clinical condition is improving and that levels of protective antitoxins have been measured and found to be adequate. Antonio Cascio, head of the infectious diseases unit at the University Hospital of Palermo, emphasized the importance of identifying the so-called index case. He suggested there could be an asymptomatic carrier within the family or among the circle of acquaintances who unknowingly infected the child. Cascio urged caution regarding the possibility of an epidemic, noting that while a localized outbreak is possible, the risk of widespread transmission is currently minimal. The death of Anna Rosa has prompted a surge in vaccinations throughout the city. At the vaccination center in the San Filippo Neri district, where the family resides, staff have had to double their numbers to meet demand. In another area, supplies of the hexavalent vaccine have run out, forcing reliance on reserve stocks. According to health officials, the increase in vaccinations could reach up to 10% in the coming hours. Cascio linked the low vaccination rates in Sicily, currently at 85% among children, to misinformation and poor public understanding, exacerbated by social media and false claims linking vaccines to autism. Health professionals have issued guidelines for individuals exposed to the infection. These include assessing vaccination coverage, conducting tests, and administering prophylactic antibiotics. Instructions have already been sent to doctors at the Cervello and Civico hospitals, which had direct contact with the patient. The situation continues to evolve as health workers work to contain the spread of the disease and prevent further cases. With the search for the source of the infection ongoing, the community remains vigilant, and efforts to boost vaccination rates continue.
