The focal mechanism solutions suggest two possible scenarios: either a rupture along an oblique fault with reverse components and left-lateral strike-slip motion, or along a right-lateral structure with a shallower dip. These interpretations were outlined by the U.S. agency based on geological data and modeling. The movement occurred within the Nazca Plate after it had descended beneath the South American plate off the coast of Colombia. This type of activity can occur due to forces acting upon the oceanic slab as it moves deeper into the Earth’s mantle. Geological expert Eduardo Malagnino explained that the movement of one tectonic plate can temporarily become locked due to friction. When this resistance is overcome, the accumulated energy is released from a point known as the focus, and the rupture spreads along a fault plane. “That is the hypocenter. That spread along that fault plane generates, obviously, the entire system of seismicity you will have,” he told La Nación. “The depth where the rupture begins is the focus, which is the hypocenter, and its projection onto the ground surface is the epicenter.” Colombia and the Caribbean region lie within a complex tectonic zone where the Nazca, South American, Caribbean, and Cocos plates interact. A key feature of this area is the subduction zone off the Colombian coast, where the Nazca Plate continues to descend under the South American Plate at a rate of roughly 65 millimeters per year. To the northwest, the Panama Fault Zone marks the boundary between the Cocos and Nazca Plates, characterized by predominantly lateral movements. Further east and northeast lies the Boconó-San Sebastián-El Pilar system, associated with the boundary between the Caribbean and South American blocks and a broad deformation zone extending into Colombian territory. Northward, tectonic activity is linked to structures such as Swan Island and Oriente, as well as the Septentrional and Enriquillo-Plantain Garden systems in Hispaniola. This intricate network helps explain why earthquakes in Colombia and the Caribbean vary in type, depth, and intensity depending on their location and the specific plates involved. The USGS issued an orange alert following the quake, indicating a high probability of damage and casualties in areas with vulnerable infrastructure. The agency estimated that around 10.5 million people could have been affected by the shaking, highlighting the potential impact of such seismic events on populated regions.
