Kowal on tensions with Ukraine: Our role is to ease
In an interview with TVN24, Polish MP Paweł Kowal discussed tensions between Poland and Ukraine, emphasizing that while there are fundamental historical differences, cooperation is possible in other areas. He commented on President Andrzej Duda's decision to revoke Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Order of the White Eagle after Zelenskyy named a military unit after the 'Bohaterowie UPA' (Heroes of the UPA), a group associated with World War II resistance but controversial due to its ties to nationalist movements. Kowal stated that Poland's role is to temper emotions and focus on pragmatic interests rather than historical grievances. He acknowledged the importance of the upcoming conference on Ukraine's reconstruction, despite Zelenskyy's absence, and stressed the need for mutual compromise. Kowal highlighted the economic interdependence between the two countries, noting that over 850,000 Ukrainians work in Poland and a significant portion of Poland's exports go to Ukraine.
