A German basketball player who attempted to physically confront Luka Dončić during a game last season has once again changed clubs. Dennis Schröder, a 32-year-old guard, will play for the Charlotte Hornets in the upcoming NBA season after being traded by the Cleveland Cavaliers. This move marks his 12th team in the NBA, bringing him closer to the record held by Isha Smith, who played for 13 teams. The trade was primarily financial, with the Cavaliers seeking greater flexibility and acquiring younger defender Tre Jones. The Hornets, in turn, gained an experienced playmaker who has previously worked alongside Charles Lee and Jeff Peterson in Atlanta. According to reports, discussions over Schröder’s potential transfer had been ongoing for several months. Schröder's journey through the NBA has been marked by frequent roster changes. Since being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2013, he has played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, Sacramento Kings, and Cleveland Cavaliers. During his time with the Kings, he appeared in 40 games, averaging 12.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. In his final stint with the Cavaliers, he averaged 8.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in 30 appearances. The incident involving Schröder and Dončić occurred during a January matchup between the Lakers and Kings. The two players, who have a history of rivalry both on and off the court, reportedly had a heated exchange. Schröder was suspended for three games following an alleged attempt to strike Dončić in the locker room. The tension between the two players intensified due to past disputes, including allegations that Dončić made derogatory remarks about Schröder, which led to emotional distress for the German player. Dončić, known for his competitive nature, has also been accused of mocking Schröder’s decision to reject an eight-figure contract offer from the Lakers years ago. This decision, which later proved costly for Schröder, contributed to the growing animosity between the two athletes. Despite these tensions, Schröder has remained professional throughout the controversy, choosing not to publicly address the issue. In his career, Schröder averages 13.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game across 912 regular-season contests. His best season came in 2017–18 with the Hawks, where he averaged 19.4 points and 6.2 assists per game. With this latest trade, Schröder joins the Hornets, marking another chapter in his long and unconventional NBA career.
