Korean cartoonist Sanho wins Eisner Award for 'Purgatory Funeral Cakes'

South Korean cartoonist Sanho has made history by winning the Eisner Award for Purgatory Funeral Cakes, becoming the first Korean creator to receive one of the comics industry’s most esteemed accolades. The 38th Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were held on July 24 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront during Comic-Con International in California, with results announced across 32 categories. Sanho’s work, Purgatory Funeral Cakes, was honored in the Best U.S. Edition of International Material, Asia category, marking a milestone for Korean comics in the global arena. Purgatory Funeral Cakes is a fantasy graphic novel centered around a bakery that specializes in creating cakes for the deceased. The story unfolds through a collection of interconnected narratives featuring customers who visit the shop to place their orders. The series launched with its first volume in 2021 and concluded with the release of its third volume in 2025. The English edition was published by Dark Horse Comics, translated by Danny Lim. The work has already gained international recognition, with rights sold in nine countries outside the United States, including Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, and France. Sanho’s achievement follows a growing trend of Korean creators gaining visibility in the international comics scene. Previous nominations in the Asia category included Kim Dong-hwa’s The Story of Life on the Golden Fields in 2010, Keum Suk Gendry-Kim’s graphic novel Grass, which was nominated in three categories in 2020, and Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok’s Hell in 2023. These works helped establish a foundation for Korean comics to compete on a global scale. The Asia category, originally created in 2007 as a Japan-only honor, expanded to include all of Asia in 2010, further broadening opportunities for creators from diverse regions. The Eisner Awards, established in 1988 in honor of comic legend Will Eisner (1917–2005), celebrate excellence in comics published in North America. Alongside France’s Angoulême Festival and the U.S. Harvey Awards, they are considered among the most prestigious honors in the field. Winning an Eisner is a significant validation for any creator, particularly for someone representing a country whose comics have historically had limited exposure in Western markets. Munhakdongne, the publisher behind Purgatory Funeral Cakes, announced the victory on Friday. The win underscores the increasing influence of South Korean storytelling in international publishing circles. The success of Purgatory Funeral Cakes reflects both the creative ambition of Sanho and the strategic efforts of publishers to bring Korean comics to a wider audience. The English translation played a crucial role in making the work accessible to non-Korean readers, highlighting the importance of translation in cross-cultural communication within the comics industry.
