Huawei officially announced the European Health Research Platform Terve Research and unveiled its latest wearable device, the Huawei Watch D3, during the 2026 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress in Munich, Germany, on September 1, 2026. The announcement included a dedicated research ecosystem tailored for academic and medical institutions, a new wearable device with CE certification for blood pressure measurement, and two clinical studies set to commence in September. Terve Research is designed as a specialized online research platform aimed at European academic and medical organizations. It enables researchers to publish and manage health studies on a large scale while supporting data collection from wearable devices. The platform represents a new paradigm in digital health research, offering researchers access to real-world health data while maintaining the highest standards of security and privacy. Named after the Finnish word for health, “tehr-veh”, Terve Research combines an application and web-based platform configured to automatically collect data from the real world using Huawei wearables, in compliance with laws, privacy regulations, and best practices for data usage. The platform, funded by Huawei, will be independently managed and operated by Thryve, one of the most recognized providers of medical technology in Europe. The research platform allows medical and health researchers to collect data from the real world through Huawei wearables in two ways. Through closed studies, where researchers recruit selected participants and provide them with devices, or through open studies, where suitable users of Huawei wearables across Europe can voluntarily join relevant research projects via the Terve Research app. Once participants enroll, the platform automatically collects necessary data anonymously at intervals determined by researchers and makes it available for analysis. By connecting researchers with a broad European base of Huawei wearable users, the platform significantly simplifies participant recruitment, reduces research costs, and enables more extensive studies. Terve Research is certified with two ISO certifications: ISO 27001 for information security management and ISO 9001 for quality management. Additionally, it fully complies with EU regulations on health data (GDPR). As an exclusively integrated part of Huawei’s wearable ecosystem, the platform ensures consistency and reliability of data across all participating studies. Two pioneering research projects were introduced within the framework of Terve Research in September 2026. These studies highlight the potential of the platform in addressing urgent healthcare challenges: The “Social Jetlag” study, led by Professor Ramin Khatami, head of the Sleep Medicine Department at the University Hospital Zurich and founding member of the European Network for Narcolepsy (EU-NN), examines the effects of circadian rhythm disruptions on the health of wearable device users throughout Europe. The goal of the study is to identify patterns linking irregular sleep-wake cycles to cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes. The study on physical activity and cardiovascular health, led by Professor Tomasz Guzik, president of the Program Committee of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), investigates the relationship between physical activity patterns and risk factors for heart and vascular diseases. This study utilizes advanced sensor technology from Huawei to continuously capture highly accurate data on activity and cardiac health. Collaborations demonstrate the platform's ability to connect leading European experts in medicine with an increasingly growing community of wearable technology users across the continent, creating a positive cycle of discoveries and applications. The project serves as evidence of the expansion of Huawei’s wearable ecosystem and its commitment to advancing health research through innovative technology.
