Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority lead adviser Gareth Gretton echoed this view, noting that communities with a slight head start in solar adoption tend to see rapid growth. “A neighborhood that was just slightly ahead in adopting solar a few years ago now becomes really quite high in terms of adoption rates,” he said. This phenomenon is evident in real-world examples, such as in New Plymouth, where solar installer Brad Lynch observed a notable shift. His company, Solar One, has witnessed a transformation in customer demographics and product preferences. A street in one suburb has become known as “Solar One Street” due to the number of homes equipped with solar panels. Lynch noted that the initial adoption began with a single house two years ago, followed by a chain reaction of similar upgrades. “We’ve got about nine properties on the one street that started with one [house] two years ago and they’ve just kept going from there.” Lynch also highlighted a dramatic change in the types of solar systems being installed. While only 30% of systems included batteries 18 months ago, that figure has risen to 85%.
