A Chinese company has stunned the tech world with the launch of its new smartphone, the Honor Robot Phone, which features a fully integrated robotic camera system. The device, unveiled during a recent event in China, marks a bold step into uncharted territory for mobile technology. Designed in collaboration with the renowned German film equipment manufacturer ARRI, the Honor Robot Phone combines advanced robotics with high-end imaging capabilities, offering users a unique experience that goes beyond traditional smartphones. The Honor Robot Phone was first showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona earlier this year, drawing significant attention from journalists and industry experts. However, it wasn’t until the recent unveiling in cities such as Chengdu, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou that the public got a firsthand look at the device. Attendees were given the opportunity to handle the phone and test the robotic camera system, which operates through a sophisticated gimbal mechanism. This innovation allows the camera to move smoothly along three axes, pitch, rotation, and horizontal tilt, while a fourth motor extends and retracts the entire assembly from within the phone's body. The design of the Honor Robot Phone is a notable departure from conventional smartphones. It features a high-resolution main camera with 200 megapixels, a sensor size of 1/1.28 inches, and an aperture of f/1.6. This camera can record 10-bit video in the ARRI LogC3 format, providing greater flexibility in color grading and dynamic range. Additionally, the device includes a periscope telephoto lens with 2.7x optical zoom and a wide-angle lens with 50 megapixels. These specifications make the Honor Robot Phone particularly appealing to content creators and filmmakers who require professional-grade equipment. ARRI’s involvement in the project brings a wealth of expertise in filmmaking technology. Known for producing high-quality cameras and lenses used in award-winning films such as Gravity, The Revenant, 1917, and Life of Pi, ARRI’s systems ensure that the images captured by the Honor Robot Phone meet professional standards. The ARRI LogC3 format provides more room for adjustment in lighting and color balance, while the support for ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and ARRI Looks further enhances the versatility of the footage. Users can edit the recorded material using software such as DaVinci Resolve, making the device suitable for both amateur and professional use. The physical design of the robotic gimbal is equally impressive. Constructed from titanium alloy, the gimbal is lightweight yet durable, allowing for smooth and precise movements. The process of extending and retracting the gimbal takes approximately four seconds, two seconds for extension and two for retraction, with a subtle, muffled sound accompanying each movement. This seamless integration of hardware and software ensures that the user experiences a fluid and intuitive interface, even with the complex mechanics involved. While the Honor Robot Phone represents a significant leap forward in smartphone technology, it comes at a premium price. Priced around €1,300 to €1,700, the device is currently available exclusively on the Chinese market. Despite the higher cost, the company has managed to position itself as a pioneer in this emerging category, leveraging its reputation for innovation and quality.
