Jure Počkaj starts his first Slovenian tour

Operni baritonist Jure Počkaj začenja svojo prvo slovensko turnejo pod naslovom 'Opera Rockstar', ki združuje operno petje, energijo rocka in sodobno koncertno produkcijo. Turneja bo obiskala več slovenskih mest in tudi Hrvaško.

Jure Počkaj has begun his first Slovenian tour, marking a significant milestone in his career as he blends operatic singing with the energy of rock music. Following a successful performance in Birmingham, England—a city renowned as a hub for heavy metal—Počkaj launched his project Opera Rockstar. This initiative merges the power of operatic vocals with the intensity of rock and modern concert production. Over the coming weeks, the tour will visit several Slovenian cities and also include a stop in Croatia. The Birmingham concert was particularly meaningful, as Počkaj performed with an English orchestra during a special tribute concert commemorating Ozzy Osbourne, one of the most iconic figures in global rock and metal music. According to Počkaj, this performance confirmed that Opera Rockstar can resonate with audiences beyond Slovenia's borders. The next stop on the tour is today at Celje Castle, where powerful operatic vocals, electric guitars, and the energy of a rock band will converge. “This isn’t about trying to merge genres for effect,” Počkaj explains. “It’s about searching for a common language between two musical worlds that are closer than they appear at first glance. Both opera and rock are rooted in emotion, the strength of interpretation, and the ability to lift the audience out of their everyday lives for a few moments. I don’t want to be Freddie Mercury or anyone else. I want to be Jure Počkaj. Opera Rockstar is not an imitation—it is our own expression. Our sound. Our story.” Breaking genre boundaries Before the start of the tour, Počkaj performed at the Piccolo Opera Festival in Vipava Villa, where he portrayed Giorgio Germont in the opera Sempre libera, based on Verdi’s La Traviata. This role is considered one of the most demanding for a baritone in the Italian repertoire. “This role was written for my voice,” Počkaj says. “Since becoming a father, I understand it completely differently. The relationship between father and son now feels much more personal, allowing me to perform and convey the role with greater sincerity.” While remaining faithful to the traditions of opera, Opera Rockstar gives Počkaj more creative freedom. “A rock concert must be spontaneous,” he adds. “Each night is different. We listen to each other and to the audience. This freedom creates energy that opera itself does not allow.” At the concert in Celje Castle, Počkaj will be joined by singer Nina, winner of the Danilo Kocjančič Award for the most promising performer at the Melodije Morja in Sonca festival. Their joint performance will further demonstrate that high-quality music transcends genre boundaries and can unite opera, rock, and contemporary concert spectacles on the same stage. Blurring the lines between opera and rock The new tour will take Počkaj to multiple Slovenian cities and also include a stop in Croatia. The fusion of classical and rock elements continues to challenge traditional perceptions of both genres. Počkaj emphasizes that the goal is not to create a hybrid but to find a unique voice that reflects his identity as a musician. His upcoming performances aim to showcase how emotional depth and artistic expression can bridge seemingly disparate worlds. As the tour progresses, fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see how this innovative approach resonates with diverse audiences. With each concert, Počkaj seeks to redefine the possibilities of musical collaboration and storytelling through sound.
