Large wildfire breaks out near Koper, air support deployed A large wildfire broke out in the area of Črnotiče near Koper on Friday afternoon, with multiple fire trucks and three aerial firefighting aircraft deployed to contain the blaze. The fire, which started around 11:30 local time, spread rapidly due to strong winds along the road between Črnotiče and Podgorje towards Petrinj. Approximately 12 hectares of land were affected, with over 84 firefighters and 26 vehicles working on-site. Aerial support from Air Tractor planes was crucial in monitoring and suppressing the flames. The incident prompted the activation of several emergency services including the Coastal Fire Department Koper, the PGD Materija, the Sežan Rescue and Fire Service, and the training instructors for wildfire suppression from Sežan. A command vehicle, PV-2, was also activated to coordinate efforts and provide strategic direction during the operation. Despite initial reports that the fire had been contained, ongoing efforts continue to extinguish individual hotspots. Meanwhile, severe weather conditions swept across much of Slovenia, with heavy rain and gusty winds causing damage in several regions. In the municipality of Komen, 15 buildings were damaged, five of them severely. A residential block in Cerknic had its roof partially torn off, according to Civil Defense commander Srečko Šestan. The storm system moved toward the northeast, affecting areas such as Maribor and further north, before gradually subsiding. Meteorologists at the Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO) noted that the storm originated over northern Italy, traveled through the Adriatic Sea, and reached the Primorska region and central Slovenia before extending into the extreme northwest. Strong wind gusts reached nearly 100 kilometers per hour in the Primorska region, while speeds dropped to around 70-80 kilometers per hour in central and eastern parts of the country. The strongest gust was recorded at 76 kilometers per hour in Celje-Medlog, followed by 72 kilometers per hour in Nova Goriča and 68 kilometers per hour in Črnomlje. These conditions led to power outages affecting approximately 5,800 households in the Elektra Celje area, with additional disruptions reported in other regions managed by Elektra Ljubljana and Elektra Primorska. In the municipality of Komen, a tornado formed around 3 p.m., causing extensive damage in the neighborhoods of Koboli, Večkoti, Čehovina, and Kodreti. Over 15 buildings were damaged, with some suffering major structural harm. Local mayor Erika Modic reported that although many roofs were damaged, no casualties were recorded. Emergency crews worked tirelessly to secure damaged structures and assist residents, with more than 55 firefighters from the Sežan Fire Rescue Service and other local units participating in the response. Power restoration efforts are underway, with teams actively addressing outages caused by fallen trees and damaged infrastructure. While the situation remains challenging, officials have expressed confidence that full service will be restored as soon as possible. As the weather calms, forecasts suggest cooler temperatures and clearer skies, with occasional showers expected throughout the weekend. The National Weather Service has warned that thunderstorms could return later in the week, though they expect the overall weather to stabilize in the coming days.
