The highlight of this year’s Fishermen’s Days in Baška took place over the weekend with traditional events such as the net-pulling ceremony and a parade through the town. These celebrations, which have become a staple of summer in Baška, drew locals and visitors alike, offering a blend of cultural heritage, community spirit, and entertainment. The festival, held from Friday to Sunday, featured the scent of freshly caught fish, music, competitions, and displays honoring the region's fishing traditions. The weekend culminated in a grand procession through the town and a symbolic net-pulling event, both deeply rooted in local customs passed down through generations. The Fishermen’s Days began on Friday with a scenic boat parade illuminated by torches, creating a striking visual display in the harbor. Traditional competitions were held on the Small River, including rope-pulling contests and balance walking on beams, drawing enthusiastic crowds who cheered for hours. The team from Čagljeva emerged victorious in both disciplines, winning the main prize, a ham. Saturday marked the official climax of the festival with the parade carrying the net from the ŠRD Škrpina headquarters through the town square to the beach. The procession brought together numerous associations, townspeople, and visitors, creating a festive atmosphere. Members of the Krabulje Drvenik Association played a key role in setting the pace with their performances. Elders carried flags, symbolizing continuity and respect for the past. Nikola Kukurić, a retired man from Sisak who has lived in Baška for two decades, expressed pride in seeing young people take charge of organizing the event. He emphasized how they are preserving what matters in Baška, ensuring the traditions continue. His involvement in the parade and the festival’s organization reflects his deep connection to the community and its heritage. The net-pulling ceremony, which drew particular attention from children eager to participate, was a highlight of the day. The catch included a variety of fish such as sea bass, mullet, and even some fine octopus. International visitors, like Corina from Germany, found the experience unique and memorable. She described her family's trip to Baška as enchanting, noting the distinctiveness of the local fishing methods compared to those in Germany. Her companion, who enjoys fishing, was particularly captivated by the event. As the parade wound back through Old Town, the sun dipped lower, yet the energy remained high. Locals watched from their windows, and whenever a girl appeared in the procession, the young men would strike a proud stance, adjusting their posture and singing along to the songs. The atmosphere on the riverfront remained lively throughout the evening, with people enjoying the rich program, relaxed ambiance, and the local cuisine.
