Croatia will witness two celestial phenomena on the same night: a partial solar eclipse followed by the meteor shower known as the Perseids. The solar eclipse will begin just before sunset on Wednesday, August 12, with the maximum obscuration occurring around 20:11 local time. The event will be visible across much of Europe, North America, and western Africa, though the total phase of the eclipse will only be observable from parts of Spain, Iceland, and Greenland. In Croatia, observers can expect up to 90% of the Sun to be obscured, making it one of the best locations for viewing the event. According to data from the website Time and Date, in Rijeka, the Sun will be almost entirely obscured, with an obscuration rate of nearly 80%. The eclipse will begin at 19:27, reach its maximum at 20:11, and end at 21:08. The timing of the eclipse coincides with the setting of the Sun, which means unusual light effects may occur due to the unique alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. The European Space Agency has arranged live broadcasts from the Astronomical Observatory Javalambre in Spain, while NASA and other organizations will also monitor the event. Research teams from the United States plan to launch more than 60 balloons from Spain and Iceland to study atmospheric changes during the brief drop in temperature caused by the total eclipse. These observations aim to provide valuable data on how the atmosphere responds to sudden cooling. This eclipse marks the latest in a series of solar eclipses visible from Europe since March 29, 2006, when the last total solar eclipse was observed. The next partial solar eclipse visible from Europe is expected to take place early next year. The Perseids are debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle as it travels through the inner solar system. The meteor shower will be best viewed in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, between 2 and 6 am. Observers in Croatia can expect optimal viewing conditions under clear skies, with the meteors appearing to radiate from the constellation Perseus. The Perseids are among the most active meteor showers of the year, typically peaking in mid-August.
