Iran and Oman agree on new route through Strait of Hormuz

Iran and Oman have agreed on a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, according to reports from Tehran. The agreement would grant Iran greater control over the strategic waterway, which lies between the two countries. The United States was not involved in the deal and has yet to comment publicly. The agreement, reached after discussions between Iranian and Omani officials, outlines specific geographical coordinates for the new route through the strait. A joint statement is currently being finalized, according to Ismail Baghai, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry. He noted that the process could be hindered by “certain third parties,” though he did not specify which ones. Oman has not made any public statements regarding the agreement. Baghai emphasized that the agreement does not guarantee security for all vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that factors contributing to the region’s instability, particularly actions taken by the United States, remain unchanged. These include “naval blockades and other aggressive and threatening measures against Iran and its interests.” The proposed route involves a north-south corridor through Iranian and Omani territorial waters. Under this plan, cargo ships entering the strait would follow a northern path through Iranian waters before proceeding southward through Omani waters upon their return. This arrangement would allow Iran to exert more influence over commercial traffic, particularly for vessels docking in Iranian ports or those in Arab Gulf states. This proposal had previously drawn concerns within the U.S. Department of Defense, as outlined by the New York Times. The concern centered around the potential for Iran to impose fees on passing vessels, a move that could disrupt global trade and increase regional tensions. While details of the current agreement with Oman remain unclear, questions persist about whether Iran and Oman will implement toll systems for maritime passage. Analysts suggest that the agreement could significantly bolster Iran’s regime. She noted that the agreement does not address broader issues such as Iran’s nuclear program or missile capabilities. Instead, it focuses solely on opening the Strait of Hormuz, which was once open to international shipping. Before the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran began, the strait remained a free international waterway. Now, under the new arrangement, it could become officially controlled by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to Willinger. Under former President Donald Trump, the U.S. government had ruled out any agreement that would grant Iran control over the strait. Trump reiterated this stance recently, stating, “I will not allow them to charge fees. If anyone charges fees, we will do it.” His administration viewed such measures as a threat to American economic interests and national security.
