Indonesian Air Force says Jakarta fighter flights were training

The Indonesian Air Force confirmed that fighter jets flying over Jakarta earlier this week were participating in training exercises tied to the Merdeka Run, an annual event commemorating Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day. According to Air Force Spokesman First Marshal I Nyoman Suadnyana, the maneuvers took place on Friday and included three F-16 Fighting Falcons departing from Iswahjudi Air Base in Magetan, East Java, heading toward the National Monument area in Jakarta. The aircraft followed a predetermined flight path before landing at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base later that day. The training exercise was timed to coincide with ongoing demonstrations in Jakarta, though officials made clear there was no direct connection between the two events. Nyoman emphasized that the military operations were strictly related to the Merdeka Run celebrations. He stated that the flights were part of a broader effort to integrate military displays with national festivities, highlighting the significance of the event in Indonesia’s calendar. The F-16s are set to return to Jakarta on Saturday (August 29) for a flypast during the opening ceremony of the Merdeka Run. Alongside the fighter jets, the aerial display will involve a CN-295 transport plane carrying parachutists and an EC-725 Caracal helicopter bearing a large flag. These elements are intended to add visual spectacle to the proceedings and underscore the nation’s military capabilities.
