2,026-meter flag unfurled in North Kalimantan's Independence Day rally

A massive 2,026-meter red-and-white Indonesian flag was unfurled during a rally in Bulungan District, North Kalimantan, on Saturday to mark the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence. The event, held on August 17, drew hundreds of participants who marched through a 4-kilometer route, raising the national flag in a display of patriotism. The parade was organized by the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) and the Orang Indonesia (OI) community, with support from local authorities and military units. Governor Zainal A. Paliwang of North Kalimantan praised the enthusiasm of the participants, including young people and ordinary citizens, who joined the procession. He described the event as a simple yet effective means of fostering national pride and unity beyond the official date of Indonesia’s independence. The governor addressed attendees before sending them off on the parade route, expressing gratitude for their involvement and acknowledging the efforts of KNPI and other groups in organizing the event. According to Sakti Abimanyu, secretary of KNPI’s North Kalimantan branch, the 2,026-meter flag was raised by more than 1,000 individuals during the parade. Over 60 public organizations, representing various sectors of the community, including youth and student groups, participated in the rally. Abimanyu emphasized that the parade aimed to promote peace and national identity among residents, particularly the younger generation, in Bulungan District. The parade began at the headquarters of the 0903/Bulungan Military District Command and concluded at the Love and Peace Monument located near the Kayan River. This location served as a symbolic endpoint for the event, reinforcing its message of unity and harmony. Abimanyu highlighted how such activities reflect the contributions of the youth in strengthening societal solidarity and nurturing a sense of national belonging. Che Ageng, head of the OI community’s Tarakan branch, mentioned that this year’s flag-raising event marked the second such occasion in Bulungan District. In 2022, a similar parade had taken place, featuring a 677-meter flag to celebrate the 77th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence. Ageng expressed hopes for continued participation and greater engagement from the public in future events, encouraging more people to take part in raising the national flag collectively. The event coincided with related celebrations elsewhere in Indonesia, including a separate initiative in the Indonesia-Malaysia border region where thousands of smaller flags were raised simultaneously. Additionally, athletes preparing for the Aquabike 2025 race joined the flag parade in another part of the country, underscoring the widespread nature of the patriotic observances across Indonesia. Participants in the Bulungan District parade included members of both civilian and military organizations, reflecting the broad-based support for the event. Local media reported that the procession moved smoothly along the designated route, with no disruptions or incidents reported. The choice of the 2,026-meter flag, matching the exact number of meters in the district’s name, added a unique touch to the commemoration, highlighting regional pride alongside national identity. As the parade reached its conclusion at the Love and Peace Monument, officials and organizers reiterated their commitment to continuing such initiatives in the future. They stressed the importance of maintaining national unity and fostering a deep sense of patriotism among the population, particularly among the youth.
