Himachal mostly dry amid scattered showers, heavy rain alert for Aug 14, 17, 18

Heavy rain continued to affect parts of Tamil Nadu today, according to live updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The downpour was reported in several locations including Kodambakkam, Nungambakkam, Vadapalani and T Nagar in Chennai, leading to waterlogging in some areas. The rain brought down temperatures and offered respite from the recent heatwave conditions in the region. The weather situation in Tamil Nadu saw varying intensity of rainfall across different regions. While moderate rain was observed in the city areas, the impact was more pronounced in rural parts where waterlogging was reported. Officials have begun assessing the extent of damage and coordinating efforts to manage the situation effectively. Local authorities are working to ensure that essential services such as electricity and water remain uninterrupted despite the adverse weather conditions. In contrast, Himachal Pradesh experienced relatively dry weather on Thursday, with only light showers recorded in certain areas. However, the state's meteorological department issued warnings for potential light rains in 10 districts. A yellow warning was extended for these regions, indicating the possibility of light to moderate rainfall. Meanwhile, an orange alert was issued for heavy rains at isolated spots on specific dates, August 14, 17, and 18. This indicates that while the overall weather pattern remains stable, there could be localized heavy rainfall events. The impact of the recent monsoon rains was evident in several parts of Himachal Pradesh, particularly in the mountainous regions. Flash floods were reported in Munchi and Chapor Nallah within the Lahaul and Spiti district on August 11. These incidents resulted in damage to infrastructure, including a 700-metre stretch of the Munchi-Tinno road, private and government khuls, irrigation pipes, and crops in some fields. Officials conducted assessments of the damage, visiting the affected areas on August 12 to engage directly with the local population and evaluate the situation. Road disruptions due to the weather were widespread, with 200 roads remaining closed in the state. Mandi district faced the highest number of road closures, with 64 affected routes, followed by 60 in Kullu, 32 in Shimla, 24 in Chamba, and smaller numbers in other districts. Power and water supply systems were also impacted, with 45 power transformers disrupted, 35 of which were located in Mandi. Additionally, 39 water supply schemes across the state were affected, highlighting the broader implications of the weather events on daily life and infrastructure. Power outages and water shortages were reported in multiple locations, affecting both urban and rural communities. Minimum temperatures in the state remained two to five degrees Celsius above normal, with Kukumseri being the coldest spot, registering a low of 10.3 degrees Celsius. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and implement measures to mitigate further disruption. Efforts are underway to restore essential services and support affected residents, ensuring that the community can recover swiftly from the impacts of the recent weather events.
