Ifo Institute: The automotive industry is once again more optimistic

The Ifo Institute reports that optimism in the German automotive industry has improved, partly due to high demand for electric vehicle subsidies. As of early August 2026, over 103,500 people have applied for funding for electric vehicles, with most applications coming from households earning up to 60,000 euros annually. The subsidy program offers up to 6,000 euros per vehicle, with higher limits for families with children, and totals three billion euros for around 800,000 vehicles by 2029. While the current business situation remains poor (-29.9 points), expectations for business have improved significantly, reaching levels not seen in over three years.

Bias read (Center): The article presents factual data on the application numbers, income brackets, and subsidy structure without overtly praising or criticizing the policy. It provides balanced context regarding both the positive trends in business expectations and the continued challenges in the current business mood.
