The core of Sonos’ update lies in the release of Sonos 27, a redesigned operating system that transforms existing devices into open platforms capable of supporting advanced AI features. A key component of this system is Sonos 27voice, an in-house assistant designed to curate music and create immersive listening environments. However, the standout feature is Sonos 27mcp, which allows external AI agents such as ChatGPT from OpenAI to interact with the Sonos network. Atty Eleti, head of product for ChatGPT Voice, explained that users will be able to request music playback from anywhere in their homes using their smartphones, all while continuing conversations with the assistant. This integration is made possible through Sonos Fabric, a new technology that enables devices to automatically detect one another and adjust acoustic settings in real time based on available equipment. In terms of hardware, the Beam Ultra represents a substantial upgrade over previous models. Maintaining the compact design that has become synonymous with the Beam series, the Beam Ultra supports true 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos audio, offering a more immersive experience. It features nine class-D amplifiers and upward-facing speakers that deliver a three-dimensional spatial effect. Additionally, the device includes an AI-powered voice enhancement function with four levels, allowing users to prioritize dialogue clarity in movies or TV shows. Priced at $699, the Beam Ultra will be available starting September 29. Its capabilities make it suitable for both casual listening and high-end home theater setups. Complementing the Beam Ultra, the Ace Ultra earbuds aim to compete in the premium segment of the market, priced at $449. These earbuds incorporate custom-designed 40-millimeter transducers and an aggressive adaptive noise cancellation system powered by ten microphones. They offer up to 35 hours of continuous playback with active noise cancellation enabled and support spatial audio with dynamic head tracking. The inclusion of the Headphone Engine 2 feature allows users to connect directly to the Sonos Wi-Fi network, enabling seamless audio streaming from the Beam Ultra to the earbuds. This functionality allows for personalized listening experiences, such as enjoying a movie at a higher volume without disturbing others in the house. Both the Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra are part of Sonos’ broader strategy to enhance user engagement through intelligent, interconnected devices. With the launch of Sonos 27 and the accompanying hardware upgrades, the company continues to position itself as a leader in the evolving landscape of smart home audio technology.
