Ownership
La Tercera is a Santiago daily founded on 7 July 1950 (as La Tercera de la Hora) by the Picó Cañas family. It is published by Consorcio Periodístico de Chile S.A. (COPESA), one of Chile's two dominant press groups, which has been controlled since the late 1980s by businessman Álvaro Saieh and his associates; Saieh held roughly 83% and by 2019 bought out remaining minority holders, consolidating control.
Funding
It is financed commercially through advertising, print sales and digital subscriptions, as part of the COPESA group's print and online portfolio. It is not state-funded.
Affiliation & stance
La Tercera's editorial line is broadly centre-right / liberal-conservative. Although owned by a powerful private conglomerate whose owner (Saieh) has banking and political-financing interests, it operates as a commercial, privately owned newspaper rather than a party or state organ, so it is classified INDEPENDENT (with the caveat of concentrated owner influence).

CNN: Why the future of oil prices will depend on China
The future of global oil prices may depend heavily on China, which has taken several measures to protect its economy from the effects of the conflict in Iran, which has restricted access to over 11 million barrels of oil per day. Through reducing imports, utilizing strategic reserves, and promoting clean energy, Beijing has absorbed much of the pressure from high prices, contributing to stabilizing the global market. Analysts estimate that China acts as an 'invisible regulatory force' in the oil market, with its ability to reduce imports by up to 3 million barrels daily—nearly equal to Japan’s total demand—helping prevent price spikes despite reduced supply due to the conflict. The Chinese government has created reserves exceeding 1 billion barrels and limited exports of refined products like gasoline and diesel to ensure domestic sufficiency and reduce international demand. Additionally, rapid development of electric vehicles has decreased oil consumption by approximately 1 million barrels per day. However, the International Energy Agency warns that potential re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz could lead to oversupply next year, potentially leading to replenishment or even growth

Venezuelan opposition criticizes government response after earthquakes and accuses lack of emergency preparedness
The Venezuelan opposition has criticized the government's response to the earthquakes that struck the country on June 24, accusing authorities of poor preparedness, disorganization, and excessive bureaucracy in relief efforts. According to official figures, the disaster has resulted in at least 1,450 deaths, over 3,000 injured, and thousands more affected, with significant damage to homes, hospitals, roads, and other infrastructure. The Platform for Democratic Unity (PUD) stated that the state was unprepared for such a crisis, highlighting insufficient resources, specialized equipment, and reaction capacity. Opposition groups emphasized that citizens, volunteers, and civil organizations had to take on much of the support work. Edmundo González Urrutia called for international humanitarian aid to reach affected communities directly without political conditions or intermediaries. Voluntad Popular, shared by opposition leader Leopoldo López, accused the government of a delayed, bureaucratic, and disorganized response, noting that the military failed to lead initial rescue efforts. The opposition highlighted the people’s solidarity in aiding victims, particularly in La Guaira, but also

Arrau valora extradición de Dayanis Orozco y afirma que cárceles chilenas están preparadas para albergar a líderes del Tren de Aragua
Chile's Minister of Public Security, Martín Arrau, led a police operation in the commune of Lo Barnechea and addressed the extradition of Dayanis Orozco, known as 'Botija,' a suspected leader of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Orozco is accused of killing a Carabineros officer in 2024. Arrau emphasized that Chile's prisons, particularly the high-security REPAS facility, are prepared to house foreign criminal leaders like Orozco and Rafael Gámez, whose extradition was approved by the United States. Former President Bachelet pauses her international tour to participate in the National Meeting of Mayors in Chile
Former President Michelle Bachelet has paused her international campaign for the position of United Nations Secretary-General to attend the 'National Meeting of Women Mayors' in Chile. The event, organized by CAF and Horizonte Ciudadano, will feature 37 women mayors from across the country, along with notable figures such as Anne Hidalgo and Carolina Tohá. Bachelet, who previously served as president of Chile, has already visited eight of the 15 UN Security Council member states and continues her efforts to gain support for her candidacy despite lacking backing from President José Antonio Kast’s administration.

Kast opens the door to form a coalition between the ruling parties amid tensions in the sector

Seriousness prevailed here: members of the review committee explain decision to reject AC against Nicolás Grau
The Chilean parliamentary review committee has decided to reject the constitutional accusation (AC) against former Finance Minister Nicolás Grau, concluding that there is insufficient legal basis for the charges. The committee members stated they reached their decision based on the arguments presented during hearings, emphasizing that they approached the process without preconceived notions. The vote was split, with the majority rejecting the AC, while one member voted in favor and another abstained. Committee chair Marcela Hernando argued that the accusations were based on projections rather than concrete evidence, noting that even the Autonomous Fiscal Council found no significant discrepancies. She also denied any conflict of interest due to her previous role as Mining Minister under President Gabriel Boric. Member Alejandro Bernales emphasized that the AC lacked legal merit and warned against using it politically to justify unpopular government policies.

Contraloría determines that Steinert exceeded his attributions; in Chile alleged assassin of carabinero Emmanuel Sánchez, and Court orders summary to new judge pro chats with Hermosilla
The Contraloría General de la República (CGR) concluded that former Minister of Security Trinidad Steinert exceeded her authority by requesting detailed background information from the National Police (PDI) shortly after taking office under President José Antonio Kast. The CGR found that Steinert’s request violated procedural norms due to her prior relationship with the police officers involved in the investigation of the 'Chen Clan' in Tarapacá, where she previously served as prosecutor. The report highlights potential conflicts of interest and calls into question the legality of her actions. Opposition leaders have criticized the findings, suggesting possible constitutional charges or an investigative commission. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado acknowledged that public officials can make mistakes but emphasized that the CGR’s findings reflect established legal obligations.
