As the summer season draws to a close, several public swimming pools in Germany have announced they will open their facilities to dogs for a special event known as Hundeschwimmen, literally “dog swimming.” This initiative allows pet owners to enjoy a final aquatic outing with their four-legged companions before the official end of the bathing season. In Brandenburg, the Freibad Elsthal in Luckenwalde has confirmed it will welcome dogs into its pool starting on September 27th. The facility plans to offer this service during the last days of the swimming season, allowing local dog owners to take advantage of the cooler water temperatures. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with entry fees set at three euros per dog, five euros per person, and three euros per child. Attendees are encouraged to bring plenty of dog toys to keep their pets entertained while they swim. To ensure safety and compliance, the pool requires proof of vaccination and liability insurance for dog ownership. Meanwhile, in Nauen, located within the district of Havelland, the city’s public bath has already scheduled a dog-friendly session on September 12th. The event will run from noon until 6:00 p.m., offering a shorter window than Luckenwalde’s event but still providing a chance for local dog owners to cool off with their pets. In the capital, Berlin is also joining the trend. Three public baths in the city will host their own Hundeschwimmen sessions throughout late September. These include the Sommerbad Staken on September 6th, the Sommerbad am Insulaner on both September 12th and 13th, and the Sommerbad Gropiusstadt on September 19th. Each session will operate from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with slightly different pricing: four euros per dog and two euros per human attendee. The practice of opening public pools to dogs is becoming increasingly common in German cities, especially towards the end of the bathing season. It provides a unique opportunity for families to spend time together in a relaxed environment. However, organizers emphasize the need for responsible participation, including proper documentation and adherence to safety protocols. Local authorities and pool operators stress that these events are designed to be safe and enjoyable for both humans and animals. They encourage pet owners to follow guidelines such as keeping dogs leashed, ensuring they are up-to-date on vaccinations, and being mindful of other swimmers.
