A team of Argentine scientists has discovered exceptionally well-preserved fossilized leaves and a fruit belonging to the genus Eucryphia in the Patagonia region, dating back approximately 20 million years. The find, located in the Formación Ñirihuau at the Pico Quemado coal mine, indicates that northern Patagonia was once home to lush, humid temperate forests with significantly higher rainfall than today. The research, conducted by experts from the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Research (Inibioma) and the Paleobotanical Division of the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences, was published in the International Journal of Plant Sciences. The fossils suggest that the Andes mountains were shorter at the time, allowing moist Pacific winds to reach the area and create a climate conducive to dense vegetation. Scientists identified two new species based on the association of leaves and a fruit found together, highlighting the importance of this discovery for understanding past climates and ecosystems.
