The hottest summer since records began

The summer of 2026 was officially recorded as the hottest in the last 260 years and among the five driest, according to data from GeoSphere Austria. This period was marked by prolonged heatwaves with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, including a new record high of 41.2°C in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Over 100 weather stations recorded new temperature highs during this time. The number of days reaching 40°C reached a new level, with six such days recorded across the summer months. Additionally, many regions experienced unprecedented numbers of days above 30°C, with Bregenz recording 47 such days. The extreme drought led to significantly lower water levels in rivers, lakes, and groundwater. The intense heat also resulted in a record number of heat-related deaths, with 646 reported in June and July alone.
