Ahmetović on the case of the Swiss citizen: We would protect citizens as in 2015

In recent developments within the Vinodolska municipality, regular elections for the Councils of Local Boards were held last week. These elections took place in four specific locations: Bribir, Grižane-Belgrad, Tribalj, and Drivenik. According to the final results published by the Municipal Electoral Commission, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) secured victories in three of these areas—Bribir, Tribalj, and Drivenik—while the Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP) emerged victorious in Grižane-Belgrad. The independent list led by Milivoj Bruketa managed to secure two mandates in Drivenik, whereas the list of the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS) did not win any mandates in Bribir. Voter turnout was notably low, standing at just 13.70 percent of registered voters.

The elected members for the Local Board of Bribir for the term 2026–2030 include Mislav Spoja (HDZ), Zlata Sertić (HDZ), Katarina Marina (HDZ), Stjepan Blažičević (HDZ), and Hrvoje Petrović (SDP). In Grižane-Belgrad, the new council consists of Željko Citković (SDP), Andrea Petrović (SDP), Sanjin Mavrić (SDP), Marijan Karlić (HDZ), and Ivica Baretić (HDZ). For Tribalj, the newly elected members are Boris Glavan (HDZ), Dario Đotlo (HDZ), Dino Belobrajić (HDZ), Paolo Gašparović (HDZ), and Sanjin Tulić (SDP). Lastly, the Local Board of Drivenik will be composed of Robert Jerčinović (HDZ), Ivan Fištrović (HDZ), Matija Šikić (HDZ), Milivoj Bruketa (Independent), and Vlatko Ivošić (Independent). Following the official confirmation of these election results, the councils will be constituted according to legal procedures and timelines.

Daniel Grbić, the mayor of Vinodolska municipality and a member of HDZ, expressed satisfaction with the election outcomes. He noted that HDZ achieved notable successes in Bribir and Tribalj, where they have four council members each, while SDP has only one representative in those areas. In Drivenik, HDZ also secured a majority with three representatives, and in Grižane-Belgrad, HDZ increased its number of mandates to two. Grbić emphasized that this result represents the best performance of HDZ so far in local board elections and expressed gratitude to the citizens for recognizing their efforts and the shortcomings of other political options. He extended his congratulations to all winners and wished them success in their work during the upcoming four-year mandate.

Meanwhile, tensions have arisen between the ruling party and the opposition over judicial independence. The leader of the SDP, Siniša Hajdaš Dončić, claimed that had the SDP been in power, the Supreme Court would have made a different decision regarding the "Swiss franc" case. This statement drew sharp criticism from HDZ officials, who accused the SDP of attempting to undermine judicial independence and manipulate institutions. Krunoslav Katičić, a representative of HDZ, stated that the judiciary in Croatia is independent and makes decisions autonomously, and all should respect these rulings. He criticized Hajdaš's comments as disrespectful and unacceptable, emphasizing that it is inappropriate to influence judicial decisions.

Nikola Mažar, another HDZ representative, highlighted concerns about the behavior of the left-wing opposition, particularly the SDP leadership, which he claims is increasingly radical and unwilling to exert pressure on the judiciary. He mentioned that the SDP is the only party that acted against the constitution during parliamentary elections when they attempted to push for a presidential candidate without following constitutional procedures. Mažar warned that the relationship of the left-wing opposition towards the judiciary is dangerous, affecting not only the Supreme and Constitutional Courts but also other institutions responsible for protecting the interests of Croatian citizens and the state itself. He announced that HDZ will conduct discussions with all candidates for judges of the Constitutional Court in accordance with the Constitution, laws, and the Rules of Procedure of the Croatian Parliament before engaging in negotiations with the opposition to ensure the Constitutional Court is fully staffed by the end of the session.

Additionally, the SDP's stance on the "Swiss franc" case sparked further debate. Mirela Ahmetović, an SDP representative, argued that the SDP would never attempt to influence the judiciary but would find ways to protect citizens, similar to how they did in 2015. She criticized HDZ for dismissing the issue and called attention to the disappointment felt by thousands of citizens affected by the financial system's failures. Ahmetović also praised the SDP's efforts in proposing measures to increase pensions for war veterans who continued working after the conflict and later retired, highlighting the importance of recognizing both their service and their professional experience. She questioned whether the current government under Prime Minister Andrej Plenković would publicly support such initiatives, suggesting that the government might be reluctant to acknowledge these proposals in written form. A plenary discussion on the Možemo party’s proposals is scheduled for tomorrow, with voting set for Friday.

Hearing of the first five candidates for Constitutional Judges

The Croatian Parliament's Committee on the Constitution, Statute, and Political System has heard the first five of 15 candidates for constitutional judges. The ruling HDZ party aims to appoint three new judges before the summer recess, but the opposition SDP refuses to negotiate, citing past controversies involving Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. Previously, three candidates failed to secure the required two-thirds majority due to disagreements between the governing party and the opposition. One candidate withdrew, while three others who had previously been discussed re-entered the race. The committee will continue hearing the remaining ten candidates at its next session. SDP plans to analyze all candidates after their hearings and propose those they deem most qualified. HDZ leader Ivan Malenica urged the opposition to engage in negotiations to finalize the appointments before the summer break, warning that the Constitutional Court would remain understaffed if no agreement is reached.
