Hawks seek help in locating vanished Eastern Cape fraudster ordered to repay victims R610,000

South African authorities are seeking public assistance in locating Buntu Ndevu, a 40-year-old man from the Eastern Cape who is wanted over a fraud case involving more than R610,000 owed to victims. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, has launched an appeal for information after Ndevu failed to meet the terms of a suspended sentence imposed by a regional court in 2021. A warrant for his arrest was issued in April 2022 following non-compliance with court orders, and a second one followed in March 2025 after repeated violations. Ndevu was found guilty of six counts of fraud by the KuGompo Regional Court in August 2021. As part of his conviction, he was sentenced to five years in prison, but this was suspended under the condition that he would not commit any additional fraud-related offences during the suspension period. In addition to the prison term, the court mandated that Ndevu repay R610,000 to the victims who had been affected by his fraudulent activities. Despite these legal obligations, Ndevu did not adhere to the requirements set forth by the court. His failure to make restitution led to the issuance of an arrest warrant on 29 April 2022. According to officials, Ndevu was subsequently located and arrested in Cape Town in 2024. During his court appearance, he expressed intent to comply with the original sentencing conditions. However, he once again fell short of fulfilling the court’s directives, which resulted in a new warrant for his arrest being issued in March 2025.
