Hantavirus detected in France tourist now isolated in Spain

A Franco-Argentine national tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus, which is transmissible between humans, after traveling to France in July and is currently isolated in Spain. The French health ministry reported that the patient showed minimal symptoms and now has none, with all necessary measures implemented to trace their movements. Experts are set to meet to discuss next steps, and European coordination is underway. Authorities have not linked the case to a recent deadly outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which led to a global health alert. The WHO declared the end of that outbreak in early July. A French woman who contracted the virus on the MV Hondius was discharged from intensive care after three months and has been moved to a rehabilitation center. There were 13 cases from the cruise, including three fatalities. Hantavirus, spread by rodents, has no known vaccine or treatment, though annual global cases involving rodent contact are much higher.
