Ownership

Channel NewsAsia (CNA) launched on 1 March 1999 and is owned by Mediacorp, Singapore's state-owned national media group. Mediacorp is wholly owned by Temasek Holdings, the investment company owned by the Government of Singapore. Control of CNA therefore runs directly up to the Singapore state via Temasek.

Funding

CNA is financed through advertising and Mediacorp's commercial broadcasting/digital revenues, underpinned by its position within a state-owned conglomerate. Mediacorp also benefits from its dominant, government-anchored role in Singapore's broadcasting market.

Affiliation & stance

Although CNA is run on a commercial broadcasting basis, its ultimate owner is the Singapore government via Temasek, and Singapore's media operate within tight government licensing and influence. Because control rests with a state investment vehicle rather than independent private owners, it is best classified STATE (a government-owned broadcaster); the site lists it as STATE, which fits. Its reporting is broadly center but tends to align with official Singapore framing on domestic matters.

Sudan's RSF closes in on Al Obeid as UN warned of imminent atrocities

Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, is advancing toward Al Obeid in the North Kordofan region, which is currently held by the Sudanese army. The city has experienced significant disruptions due to RSF drone strikes targeting both military and civilian infrastructure, including the main power station, leading to power outages, water shortages, and hospital operations being affected. Residents report that life remains mostly normal despite these challenges, though fuel shortages persist after attacks on gas stations. Videos circulating online show RSF fighters claiming they will capture Al Obeid within days. Al Obeid is strategically important as it houses the army's 5th Infantry Division and serves as a major commercial hub. Losing this city would be a significant setback for the army, similar to their previous loss of El Fasher in Darfur, which led to widespread atrocities by the RSF. In response, multiple countries, including Norway, Britain, France, and Germany, have raised concerns at the UN Human Rights Council, warning of potential large-scale atrocities if the RSF escalates its assault on Al Obeid.

An American gets the maximum amount of recovery time at Wimbledon.

The article discusses the scheduling of the first-round doubles match at Wimbledon involving American tennis player Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams against the Argentine-Colombian pair Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. The match was initially scheduled for Thursday and Friday but has been postponed due to Serena's injury during her singles match. Tournament organizer Andy Murray (likely a misstatement, as Andy Murray is a British player, and the correct name might be someone like Ashley Barker or another official) stated they are giving Serena as much time as possible to recover. They ruled out postponing the match to later dates unless necessary for safety or tournament flow. The match is expected to take place on a larger court to accommodate the large crowd attracted by Serena and Venus, who are major stars. Serena returned to professional tennis after four years, but she lost her first singles match and injured her knee. She did not attend a press conference afterward due to health reasons and expressed her commitment to participating in the doubles event. Serena and Venus have won six doubles titles together, including a title in 2016.

The team features Siya Kolisi as captain, with notable players like Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jasper Wiese in the loose trio. Locks Eben Etzebeth and Ruan Nortje, along with hooker Malcolm Marx and his props Ox Nche and Thomas du Toit, form a strong front row. The selection emphasizes balance between veterans and emerging talents, with Erasmus highlighting the importance of accuracy and converting opportunities during the challenging match against England.

France skipper Dupont out of Nations Championship tests

France rugby captain Antoine Dupont has withdrawn from the upcoming Nations Championship tests, which will feature matches against New Zealand, Australia, and Japan. The French Rugby Federation announced that Dupont will not travel with the team, though they did not provide a reason. Reports suggest he may be dealing with a calf injury, despite playing in the recent Top 14 final where he returned after being substituted. His absence will be filled by Toulouse teammate Paul Graou, who is making his debut in the competition. The three-test series starts with a match against New Zealand in Christchurch on June 30, followed by games against Australia and Japan.

Tesla rolls out robotaxi service in Miami

Tesla announced the availability of its robotaxi service in Miami, marking another step in its expansion of autonomous ride-hailing operations. The move underscores Tesla's focus on promoting its self-driving technology, which is central to CEO Elon Musk's strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence and robotics. Tesla previously launched its unsupervised robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, and plans to expand further to cities like Dallas and Houston. Musk expressed confidence that fully self-driving vehicles could become more common in the U.S. later this year. Additionally, Tesla reported strong second-quarter delivery numbers, exceeding Wall Street expectations, driven largely by improved performance in Europe.

Pogacar is undeniable favourite, says Tour de France director

Tadej Pogacar, the two-time defending champion from Slovenia, is widely considered the favorite to win this year's Tour de France, which starts in Barcelona. Tour director Christian Prudhomme confirmed Pogacar's status as the 'undeniable favourite,' noting his pursuit of a record-equalling fifth title. His main competitor is expected to be Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, who has recovered from a serious crash earlier in the season. Prudhomme also highlighted young French cyclist Paul Seixas, a 19-year-old making his debut and aiming to challenge for top positions in the general classification. Prudhomme expressed hope for a French victory and stated he has no plans to retire after leading the Tour for 20 editions.

Putin recognizes the oil map for the first time

Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged for the first time that Russia is building 'some oil reserves' during a meeting focused on energy issues. He emphasized the need to strengthen domestic oil production and increase output. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continued their attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, detonating an oil purification plant in the southern Krasnodar region, which produces around four million tons of crude oil annually. The Krasnodar region is one of Russia's largest oil-producing areas located near the Black Sea. On Tuesday, Ukrainian forces launched large-scale air strikes on Sevastopol, the largest city on Crimea, including attacks on oil facilities. In response, Russia, which annexed Crimea in 2014, has restricted fuel sales to the public to counteract the energy shortages. According to reports, these attacks have had no impact on the front line. During an interview with a Russian state television station, Putin described the Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure as an attempt to destabilize Russian society. He stated that Ukraine's goal was to halt the deployment of Russian military units to improve their position in arms control talks.

Top players to end media protests at Wimbledon

Top tennis players, including representatives like former WTA CEO Larry Scott, have agreed to resume media obligations at Wimbledon after discussions with organizers, though they emphasized that key issues such as prize money distribution and player representation remain unresolved. The players had previously halted their media duties as part of a protest but decided to pause further action due to Wimbledon's promise to present specific proposals addressing their concerns. Wimbledon increased its prize money by 20% compared to last year, reaching £64.2 million, which is still below the £70 million requested by players. The players are pushing for a higher percentage of revenue—specifically 16%—compared to Wimbledon’s current 15%. They also highlighted the disparity between Wimbledon’s prize money allocation and that of other ATP and WTA tournaments. Some players, like Aryna Sabalenka, have suggested the possibility of future boycotts if demands are not met.

Male players following Osaka's lead on Wimbledon's fashion runway

At Wimbledon, male tennis players such as Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz are drawing attention for their stylish on-court outfits, mirroring the fashion trends seen with female players like Naomi Osaka. Djokovic wears a personalized Lacoste blazer and shorts, while Fritz opts for a white cotton Hugo Boss jacket, long pants, and a white silk scarf. Joelle Michaeloff, a creative officer at Wilson sports brand, notes that male players are increasingly using clothing as a form of self-expression, influenced by historic Wimbledon fashion moments. While the tournament requires all-white attire, players still find ways to incorporate personal style, with sponsors leveraging these walk-ons for marketing. Fritz emphasizes the importance of balancing fashion with performance, having reached the third round without dropping a set. Sponsors like Nike and Hugo Boss are capitalizing on these opportunities, highlighting the evolving relationship between athletes and brands.

Winning at what cost? More children getting hurt amid growing pressure to excel in youth sports

The article discusses the increasing prevalence of sports-related injuries among young athletes in Singapore, using the case of Gwenaelle Mak, a 16-year-old former artistic gymnast, as an example. Gwenaelle suffered a torn meniscus due to intense training schedules starting from childhood, requiring surgery and extensive physiotherapy. She returned to a modified training regimen after nine months of recovery. Doctors at major public hospitals note a rising trend in similar cases among children participating in competitive sports. Health professionals warn that early specialization and high-intensity training during critical growth periods (ages 8–15) increase the risk of long-term physical harm, particularly affecting growth plates in young athletes.

I always thought getting ahead was the point. My grandmother showed me I was wrong

The article reflects on the author's reevaluation of success through the lens of their grandmother's life. In Singapore, societal norms often emphasize individual achievement, such as academic success, career advancement, and visible accomplishments. However, the author's grandmother, described as a homemaker, dedicated her life to volunteering and serving her community without seeking recognition or material gain. She spent over two decades tutoring children with learning difficulties and contributed extensively to her church, performing tasks like organizing events, preparing food, and welcoming attendees. Her approach to life centered on selfless service rather than personal accolades. The author realized that their understanding of success, shaped by societal expectations, was limited compared to their grandmother’s values of contributing to others.

How these companies improved employee engagement through listening, not wellness perks

Ngee Koon & LFA Studio, a Singapore-based interior build firm, implemented a common weekly work-from-home day after employee feedback highlighted communication challenges caused by inconsistent remote work policies. Marketing and communications director Ms Stacy Zuo noted that this change improved collaboration, reduced misunderstandings, and fostered a greater sense of belonging among staff. The company also introduced cross-team meetings and social activities to strengthen team bonds. Despite these improvements, the Singapore Workplace Report 2026 reveals that only 14% of employees in Singapore are engaged at work, significantly lower than regional and global averages. The report attributes low engagement to external economic pressures and the prevalence of SMEs and family-owned businesses in the country.
