Green group leader: Government will look into petrol price gouging

Green Party faction leader Katharina Dröge accused the government of doing nothing while high fuel prices continue to exploit consumers, according to reports from Tagesschau (ARD). The situation has intensified with rising costs driven by geopolitical tensions and environmental factors, prompting calls for new measures to address the issue. Fuel prices have remained elevated for weeks, with the Greens arguing that citizens are being taken advantage of. Dröge told Bild-Zeitung that she had no understanding of how the government allows this to happen. She called for an additional profit tax on oil companies, suggesting that the revenue could be passed back to households through reduced energy taxes. This proposal aligns with broader concerns over the impact of current pricing trends on everyday consumers. The German Automobile Association (ADAC) also noted that fuel prices remain too high, citing recent increases linked to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran and ongoing drought conditions in parts of Germany. Normally, the Rhine River plays a key role in transporting oil and gasoline via tankers, but low water levels have significantly limited this capacity, leading to higher logistics costs. These challenges have contributed to the overall rise in fuel prices. Dröge criticized the federal government for its lack of action, stating that the task force established in March to address rising fuel and energy prices due to the Iran conflict has failed. She argued that profits generated by oil companies should be taxed and used to lower household energy bills. According to her calculations, continued price trends could result in more than eight billion euros in excess profits by year’s end. A tax on these gains might generate up to three billion euros, which she believes should be returned to the public. In recent days, other political figures have echoed similar sentiments. State Premier of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Manuela Schwesig (SPD), also advocated for an additional profit tax on oil firms. Meanwhile, SPD politicians have supported a cap on fuel prices. However, Wirtschaftsministerin Katherina Reiche (CDU) opposes both the proposed tax and the price ceiling, reflecting internal divisions within the coalition. The debate highlights growing frustration among lawmakers and consumer groups over the economic strain caused by high fuel prices. While some parties push for immediate intervention, others remain cautious, emphasizing the need for careful policy design. As the situation continues to evolve, further discussions and potential legislative actions may follow, depending on how the government responds to mounting pressure.
