Riverside residents have been alerted to a preventive water-saving measure.

Due to prolonged dry conditions and unfavorable hydrological circumstances in the Rijeka area, the City of Rijeka and the Water Supply and Sewerage Company (ViK) have issued a warning to residents, businesses, and the tourism sector to use water responsibly and efficiently. While current water supply remains stable and sufficient for human consumption, available reserves are gradually decreasing, and the system faces increased pressure. This year’s hydrological conditions have been significantly worse than usual, with extremely dry spring months and insufficient rainfall in May, June, and July to replenish groundwater reserves. As a result, the water supply system has relied more heavily on pumping water from coastal sources than usual. However, there is currently no need for restrictions or reductions in water supply. The authorities recommend avoiding watering lawns and ornamental green areas with drinking water, delaying car and boat washing, postponing pool filling, checking for leaks in internal plumbing systems, and using washing machines only when fully loaded. The goal is to reduce daily water consumption by 10–15 percent.

If you don't reduce your consumption...

Due to record-high water consumption during a prolonged drought, Istarski vodovod i odvodnja has issued a final warning to residents to reduce unnecessary water usage to avoid potential supply reductions. The utility has urged citizens to stop watering green areas and washing driveways immediately. The increased demand is attributed to high temperatures and prolonged dry conditions, which have placed significant pressure on the distribution network. Existing pipes of smaller profiles cannot simultaneously provide sufficient water to all users, according to the utility. The appeal applies to specific areas including Vižinada, Kaštelir-Labin, Višnjana, Tinjan, Baderna, Žbandaj in Poreč, and Barat in Kanfanar. Residents are also warned that reduced pressure in the network could lead to cloudy water, and they should notify the duty dispatcher if this occurs.

A river urged citizens to conserve water

The city of Rijeka and the Water Supply and Sewerage Company (ViK) have called on citizens, businesses, the tourism sector, and other water users to conserve water due to prolonged drought conditions. While current water supply remains stable and sufficient quantities of safe drinking water are available, reserves are gradually decreasing, and the system is becoming increasingly strained due to high temperatures and increased consumption. Authorities emphasize that there is no immediate cause for concern and no need for mandatory restrictions, but they recommend voluntary conservation measures such as avoiding washing cars, filling pools, and watering lawns with drinking water. The water supply system has been relying more heavily on coastal sources this year due to unfavorable hydrological conditions, including an exceptionally dry spring and insufficient rainfall in recent months.

Bias read (Center): The article presents a factual report on water conservation efforts by local authorities and does not exhibit clear ideological bias. It provides information on the situation without taking a stance or using loaded language.

The City of Rijeka and KD ViK urge users to use water responsibly and rationally

The City of Rijeka and KD ViK call for preventive water conservation in Rijeka
