Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 during its Made by Google event on Wednesday, introducing a range of new features centered around enhanced health monitoring and integration with the Gemini AI assistant. The device, priced starting at $399, includes advanced capabilities such as blood pressure pattern tracking, insulin resistance detection, and improved sleep and fitness tracking. It is set to go on sale on August 20 after opening pre-orders on the same day. The Pixel Watch 5 is designed to offer personalized assistance, using contextual awareness to provide relevant suggestions. For instance, it can pull up locations mentioned in messages, such as a smoothie shop shared by a family member. Users can interact with Gemini by raising their wrist, allowing them to perform tasks like finding nearby dining spots with navigation support or managing timers, alarms, and workouts using voice commands. The watch also displays real-time updates directly on its interface, including flight information, estimated arrival times, and other useful reminders. In terms of health monitoring, the Pixel Watch 5 employs sensors and machine learning algorithms to analyze blood pressure patterns, aiming to detect early signs of cardiovascular stress. This functionality has been validated against 24-hour blood pressure monitors and relies on an advanced waveform model trained on over 1 billion minutes of data from more than 500,000 individuals. Additionally, the watch identifies potential changes in metabolic health linked to insulin resistance, potentially indicating risks for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. This analysis integrates data from sleep, heart rate, physical activity, and other metrics, utilizing a large sensor model to assess long-term trends in insulin resistance. Monthly summaries of blood pressure and insulin resistance trends will be provided to users. The device also includes a feature capable of detecting prolonged drops in oxygen saturation and automatically contacting emergency services if a breathing emergency is suspected. This function is initially available in selected European countries and will expand to other regions in the future. Sleep tracking has been refined for greater accuracy, with improvements reaching 15%. A new bedtime watch face minimizes nighttime interruptions, while the “Smart Wake” feature helps users awaken at the most suitable moment in their sleep cycle. A novel sleep breathing quality metric continuously evaluates minute-to-minute variations in blood oxygen levels. For fitness enthusiasts, the Pixel Watch 5 offers significantly enhanced GPS route tracking, doubling the precision compared to earlier models. This improvement ensures more accurate workout and running data, aligning recorded routes closely with actual courses. The device runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform, delivering 12% higher CPU performance and 50% more RAM than its predecessor. Overall, the watch operates 20% faster than previous versions. Battery life extends up to 40 hours, and the watch comes in new color options, including Canyon Fog and Olive. The 41mm model begins at $399, while the 44mm variant is priced at $429. Pre-orders commenced on Wednesday, with availability beginning on August 20.
