Engineers in Brisbane have completed a massive 80-tonne mechanical barrier called 'The Esky Lid,' designed to protect the city's new underground Cross River Rail tunnels from flooding. Unveiled at Albert Street Station, the 22-meter by 10-meter structure can descend from the ceiling to seal the station entrance during floods, preventing water ingress up to 10.3 meters above street level, a 1-in-10,000-year flood event. The station, located in a flood-prone area of Brisbane's CBD, will serve as the deepest point of the 10-kilometer rail network. The system includes sliding panels that blend with the ceiling when inactive and shutters to block the northern entrance during severe flooding. Project leader Jeremy Kruger noted that while the system is highly effective, it is unlikely to be used, as such extreme conditions are rare. Construction is set to finish in early 2027, with passenger services planned for 2029. The project, initially budgeted at $5.4 billion, has faced delays and cost overruns, now estimated at nearly $19 billion, making it Queensland's largest infrastructure project.
