German army inspectors to join NATO: Bundeswehr urges 'quick decision' on Breuer's replacement

Germany’s highest-ranking military officer, General Carsten Breuer, has been elected as the new chairman of the NATO Military Committee. The decision was made during a meeting of the committee in Copenhagen on September 19, 2026. Breuer will officially assume the role in July 2027, succeeding Italian Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. His appointment marks a significant shift in NATO leadership, with Germany taking on a more prominent role in the alliance's military structure. Had she won, she would have become the first woman to lead the NATO Military Committee.
