Gelendschik: Ukrainian sea drone apparently destroyed Russian FSB ship in Black Sea port

A Ukrainian sea drone reportedly sank a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) patrol ship near the Black Sea port of Gelendschik, according to reports emerging Tuesday. The vessel, identified as the Izumrud, was struck by a Ukrainian Sargan-3000 sea drone, causing extensive damage visible in satellite imagery released by the Ukrainian navy via its Telegram channel. The incident marks one of the farthest-reaching attacks yet against Russian naval assets, with the Izumrud located more than 600 kilometers from the nearest major Ukrainian port city, Odessa. The Izumrud is described as a 62-meter-long patrol ship equipped with a helicopter landing platform. According to the Washington Post, it operates under the FSB, Russia’s primary intelligence agency. Ukrainian officials claim the attack resulted in casualties among the crew, though these claims have not been independently verified. Russian authorities have not officially confirmed the loss of the ship, despite growing evidence pointing to its destruction. The attack has drawn particular attention due to the historical context surrounding the Izumrud. Reports suggest the vessel was involved in a 2018 incident in the Kerch Strait, where Russian forces opened fire on Ukrainian ships attempting to transit through the strait into the Azov Sea. The luxurious estate, which gained international attention after opposition figure Alexei Navalny detailed its existence in a video several years ago, sits just a few kilometers south-east of Gelendschik along the coast.
