Gauteng Health's new strategies aim to cut waiting times for child surgeries

The Gauteng Department of Health has introduced new strategies to reduce waiting times for children needing specialized surgery at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH). These measures include improving theater efficiency, managing surgical waiting lists more effectively, enhancing case scheduling, and expanding the Treatment Time Guarantee (TTG) program. CMJAH handles a wide range of pediatric surgical cases, but waiting times for elective procedures remain an issue due to increased emergency demands, limited theater capacity, staffing shortages, and bed availability constraints. Departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona noted that while emergency cases take priority, they contribute to delayed elective surgeries. The department is implementing changes such as dedicated emergency pediatric surgical theater lists and improved scheduling practices to enhance theater utilization and reduce cancellations. The TTG program has already shown success in improving access to timely surgery.
