Marine Protected Areas Day, observed globally on August 1, has brought renewed attention to the importance of preserving the world's oceans, with two Cape Town freedivers using their unique skills to highlight the beauty and vulnerability of local marine ecosystems. Freediver Rethaa Karriem and Amin Gray have taken to the waters off the South African coast to capture images and experiences that underscore the need for conservation efforts. Karriem, a qualified freediver with over a year and a half of experience, has dedicated himself to exploring the coastal waters of Cape Town. His passion for the ocean began during childhood with activities such as surfing and snorkelling, but it was through freediving that he developed a profound respect for the marine environment. He emphasizes the necessity of understanding the ocean to effectively protect it, noting that even minor environmental changes can significantly affect both marine life and humans. “Nature is always the protagonist,” Karriem stated, explaining how people are intrinsically linked to the natural world. He believes that by immersing oneself in the ocean, individuals gain a deeper appreciation for its complexities and the urgent need for preservation. Karriem finds particular fascination in the shipwrecks scattered along Cape Town’s coastline, viewing them as symbols of the ocean reclaiming human artifacts and transforming them into vibrant habitats for marine life. Gray’s journey into the ocean began during the early stages of the pandemic, when he decided to take up diving. This decision marked a pivotal moment in his life, leading him to discover an unexpected love for the sea. His first dive at the A-Frame site in False Bay was a transformative experience, described as “extremely liberating.” Gray expressed awe at the breathtaking beauty found beneath the surface, comparing each dive to a spiritual experience akin to visiting a mosque. Together, Karriem and Gray have founded an adventure company called Grava, focused on providing immersive experiences centered around Cape Town’s natural wonders. Their mission is to create meaningful connections between people and the environment, promoting a sense of responsibility towards ecological conservation.
