Scientists debunk the myth that there is enough food in times of crisis

Researchers have challenged the myth that Sweden cannot produce enough food for its population during a crisis. According to Elin Röös, a researcher involved in the study, the focus on increasing domestic production has overshadowed other vulnerabilities in the food supply chain, such as infrastructure, energy supply, storage capacity, and processing capabilities. Despite low public confidence in Sweden’s food security, data from the National Food Agency indicates that domestic food production could meet the energy needs of 14 million people. The report highlights that while Sweden imports a significant portion of its food, this does not necessarily mean it is overly dependent on foreign countries for raw materials. Instead, the emphasis should be on ensuring the existing production system functions effectively and reaches consumers. The government’s updated food strategy aims to strengthen preparedness and build a more resilient food chain. Local initiatives, like those in Södertälje municipality, demonstrate how integrated approaches can address both food security and sustainability.
