Preferent prosecutor leads investigation into armed attack on Carabineros official in Antofagasta

A senior prosecutor has taken charge of an investigation into a shooting incident involving a police officer from Chile's Carabineros force in Antofagasta. Between the first half of 2025 and 2026, the number of Carabineros officers injured by bullets while performing their duties doubled, according to available data. Local authorities have been under pressure to address rising levels of criminal activity, including drug trafficking and organized crime, which have contributed to increased risks for law enforcement personnel.
