A new study led by Concordia University examines the entire life cycle of polyester and cotton T-shirts to identify the most significant environmental impacts and potential areas for improvement. The research highlights that while polyester T-shirts generate higher greenhouse gas emissions due to their reliance on fossil fuels, cotton T-shirts require more land and water resources. Transportation methods and garment lifespan were found to have a larger impact on carbon footprints than material type alone. Replacing air freight with sea freight could reduce emissions by up to 60%, and doubling a garment’s lifespan could cut emissions by nearly half. The study recommends reducing production volume, designing durable clothing, and minimizing air freight usage to lower the fashion industry's environmental impact. Consumers are encouraged to extend the life of their clothing rather than focusing solely on material composition.
