Control methods vary widely depending on the type of mosquito. For species like Aedes, countries employ a mix of chemical and non-chemical approaches, including targeting immature stages of the insects and launching community awareness campaigns. However, these efforts are frequently ad hoc and lack consistency. Climate change is adding urgency to the issue, with warmer temperatures extending the breeding seasons of mosquitoes and allowing viruses to circulate for longer periods. The ECDC warns that prolonged and more intense transmission seasons could become the norm for diseases like West Nile, dengue, and chikungunya. Health authorities are urging governments to invest in sustainable mosquito management systems.
