The Pride flags are missing from the Elizabeth Bridge, and the capital suspects vandalism.

The rainbow flags associated with the Pride event had disappeared from Budapest's Elizabeth Bridge, prompting the city administration to suspect deliberate vandalism. The mayor's office confirmed the incident and filed a report, stating they would replace the flags soon as part of Budapest's commitment to diversity during Pride Month. A video uploaded to Reddit showed someone removing a flag and throwing it into the Danube. The upcoming Pride event was scheduled for June 27, but organizers had already registered it with the police on May 27 under the assembly law. Organizers argue that true systemic change cannot happen without repealing certain laws restricting gatherings. In 2025, Parliament passed legislation banning Pride events and similar gatherings, prohibiting assemblies promoting homosexuality or gender identity. Mayor Gergely Karácsony declared the 2025 Pride as an official municipal event, though the police classified it as an unauthorized gathering. Despite the ban, the largest-ever Pride event took place in Budapest, leading to legal proceedings against Karácsony, which were later dropped.

The Western Square in Budapest is undergoing a significant transformation that extends beyond its surface-level changes. According to reports, the area will see a complete overhaul of its underground passage as well. This development comes after the availability of European Union funding, which allows for more ambitious renovations than previously planned. The redesign includes the creation of a new tram section that will connect the Deák Square to the Lehel Square, crossing the Nagykörút near the Western Railway Station.

The tram track, currently running down the middle of Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street flanked by green trees, will be moved to both sides of the road. This change will allow passengers transferring to the tram to easily access the station building. Additionally, pedestrians who previously had to use the former Skála Metro area can now cross via a zebra crossing, making all four directions around the intersection accessible on the surface. The current parking lot will be transformed into a park, while the existing six lanes will be reduced to two lanes per side. The space previously occupied by cars will be used for the tram tracks, the adjacent tree-lined avenue, and the bicycle lanes that were previously on the sidewalks.

Following the defeat of the Fidesz party in elections, the city government saw an opportunity to implement a more ambitious redevelopment plan. As a result, they granted permission to the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) to activate an optional part of the design contract for the Pest loop tram project. This decision enables the comprehensive renovation of the Western Square's underground passage. The planning for the tram route passing through Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street was decided by the capital city in late 2024, with significant involvement from Vitézy Dávid and the Podmaniczky Movement he leads. The design contracts were signed with the Főmterv Zrt. last October. The activation of this option does not incur additional costs since the 189 million forint cost is already included in the previous 1.9 billion forint design fee.

Funding for these projects could come from a 16 billion euro fund, which Hungary has been unable to access due to concerns about the rule of law raised by the European Union. Prime Minister Magyar Péter agreed with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on opening up this resource. However, some parts of this funding can only be accessed once detailed plans are available, providing a suitable basis for the city’s existing plans, which the previous government did not intend to finance using the previously inaccessible EU funds.

Meanwhile, the disappearance of Pride flags from the Elizabeth Bridge has sparked concern. The City Hall informed the Telex that the flags have vanished and that they are investigating possible deliberate damage. They stated that the flags would be replaced within a few days, emphasizing their place during the Pride month and the upcoming parade. The next Budapest Pride event is scheduled for June 27, announced to the police in mid-May. Despite the ban on such events under the current law, organizers argue that the system is not fully reformed without amendments to the assembly law. Last year, despite the government’s ban, the largest Pride demonstration in history took place in Budapest. Organizers faced legal challenges, but the court suspended the proceedings. Interior Minister Pósfai Gábor mentioned that it should be possible to hold Pride legally, though modifying the assembly law is not among the government’s immediate priorities.

In another development, Mayor Karácsony Gergely expressed his views on Budapest's potential to host the Olympics. He suggested that if the city could catch up with itself over the next decade, it might be able to host the Games. He highlighted that the city's sports infrastructure is nearly ready for competition and that developments needed for the Olympics would also benefit the city regardless. He noted that the Olympic philosophy focuses on cities rather than sports, which could restore Hungary's global reputation. In response to criticism about economic feasibility, Karácsony argued that necessary developments have already taken place and that deadlines serve as effective motivators. He emphasized that the current proposal, developed jointly with the Hungarian Olympic Committee, focuses on the city rather than elite sports and aims to present it soon to the public.

Christmas: If this city could catch up in ten years, it could host the Olympics

Budapest's mayor, Karácsony Gergely, stated during an interview with ATV that if the city could catch up with its own development over the next ten years, it would be capable of hosting the Olympics. He emphasized that much of the necessary sports infrastructure is already in place and that urban developments like upgrading the HÉV (electric tram system), building a student village, and improving basic infrastructure are needed regardless of the Olympics. Karácsony argued that hosting the Olympics would restore Hungary’s global reputation, which he claims has been damaged over the past 16 years. He also noted that while the country's economic situation was previously seen as unsuitable for large investments, progress has been made since 2017, and the Olympic bid now focuses more on the city itself rather than elite sports.

The Pride flags have disappeared from the Elizabeth Bridge.

The flags of the Pride event have disappeared from the Elizabeth Bridge in Budapest, according to the Mayor's Office, which has filed a report suspecting deliberate damage. The authorities plan to replace the flags within a few days, emphasizing their place during Pride Month and the parade in a 'free, colorful, and solidarity-based' Budapest. The next Pride event is scheduled for June 27, announced by organizers to the police at the end of May. However, the law banning Pride parades remains in effect. Organizers argue that without amending the law, the system change is incomplete. Last year, despite government restrictions, Budapest hosted its largest-ever Pride parade. Karácsony Gergely, co-organizer of the event, was accused by the prosecution in January of violating freedom of assembly and association, but the court suspended the proceedings in March. Earlier, Pósfa Gábor, Minister of Interior in the Tisza government, stated that legal frameworks must allow for the Pride event, though modifying the assembly law is not among the government's top priorities.

Not only can the overpass disappear, but the Western Square can also be completely renewed from below

The Western Square (Nyugati tér) in Budapest is undergoing significant redevelopment, including the transformation of both the surface level and the underground passage. A new tram line will connect the area, with changes to traffic flow, pedestrian crossings, and green spaces. The project was approved by the city council following the election loss of Fidesz, allowing for more ambitious renovations.

Bias read (Center): The article provides factual information about infrastructure developments without overt ideological language or biased sourcing. It mentions the political context (Fidesz's election loss) but does not frame this as a positive or negative development, maintaining neutrality.

Why these scores (Factual 70 · Objective 60): The article accurately describes infrastructure changes at Nyugati Square based on available information. However, it frames the project as an opportunity after a political defeat, introducing a subtle bias rather than presenting facts neutrally.
