A massive agricultural estate in Ávila, Spain, played a crucial role in slowing down the worst wildfire in the country’s history, preventing further uncontrollable spread. The fire, which scorched more than 50,000 hectares, was contained partially due to the strategic management of the land by the historic estate known as El Quexigal. Located near the town of Cebreros, this property has been under continuous agroforestry management for over two decades, allowing it to act as a natural barrier against the flames. Ferran Dalmau, a forestry engineer and emergency response technician deployed during the blaze, emphasized the significance of the estate's management approach. He stated that the agroforestry practices helped reduce the intensity of the fires and prevented them from spreading unchecked. According to Dalmau, the key lies in managing fuel strategically within specific areas so that wildfires encounter breaks in continuity and lose strength. This method, he explained, goes beyond simply clearing forests, it involves creating landscapes with varied structures that limit the spread of fire. El Quexigal, once owned by King Philip II and considered one of Europe’s most luxurious country estates in the 19th century, has a rich historical background. Originally managed by monks, the estate produced oil, wine, honey, and food, along with timber from its abundant tree cover, including the quejigo tree, after which the area is named. Today, the property is used for multiple crops, and plans are underway to transform the palace into a luxury hotel, currently under construction. The estate’s current owner, Carlos Escorial, noted that the land has been subject to planned forest harvesting, periodic clearing of undergrowth, removal of fine fuels, and the elimination of dead trees. These efforts have maintained a controlled density of vegetation and ensured that all paths remain accessible. The property features several firebreaks, areas where vegetation and combustible materials are reduced or eliminated, to divide the land into sectors. Escorial explained that these firebreaks were instrumental in containing the fire, as three of the four entry points were blocked, limiting the damage to over 200 hectares. The estate is situated alongside the river Sotillo, also known as the Río de las Palizas, and close to the confluence with the Cofio River. Dalmau, who witnessed the containment efforts, described how the firefighters took advantage of the estate’s structured landscape to anchor their operations and slow the fire’s advance. He highlighted that the estate demonstrated a long-held belief among forestry professionals, that managed landscapes can serve as tools for fire suppression. Unlike abandoned forests, El Quexigal’s terrain includes pastures, crops, trails, and a diverse structure that reduces the continuity of combustible material. As the fire’s intensity decreased, Dalmau pointed out that the conditions allowed for safer and more effective firefighting, even enabling direct attack methods that would otherwise be too dangerous in other regions. This outcome underscores the importance of integrating sustainable land management into broader fire prevention strategies. Professor Antonio Jordán López, a soil science expert at the University of Seville, notes that the Mediterranean climate, characterized by dry summers and hot temperatures, creates highly flammable conditions. Intense heat waves, low humidity, and strong winds contribute to rapid fire spread. Climate change, he adds, exacerbates this situation by extending the risk period and increasing fire intensity.
