Ownership

ABC is the flagship daily of Grupo Vocento, one of Spain's two largest multimedia groups. It was founded in Madrid in 1903 by Torcuato Luca de Tena y Alvarez-Ossorio and published for nearly a century by the family-controlled Prensa Espanola. In 2001 Prensa Espanola merged with the Basque group Grupo Correo to form Vocento, which remains a publicly listed company in which founding families (including descendants of the Luca de Tena, Ybarra and other Basque shareholder families) hold significant blocks.

Funding

Financed commercially through print and digital advertising, newsstand sales and online subscriptions, as part of Vocento's diversified portfolio of national and regional newspapers. It receives no party or state subsidy beyond ordinary institutional advertising.

Affiliation & stance

ABC is a conservative, monarchist and Catholic-leaning paper, historically right-of-center, and editorially aligned with Spain's center-right. Because it is privately and commercially owned by a listed media group (Vocento) with no party or government control over its editorial line, it is classified INDEPENDENT despite its clear conservative stance.

An American gets the maximum amount of recovery time at Wimbledon.

The article discusses the scheduling of the first-round doubles match at Wimbledon involving American tennis player Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams against the Argentine-Colombian pair Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. The match was initially scheduled for Thursday and Friday but has been postponed due to Serena's injury during her singles match. Tournament organizer Andy Murray (likely a misstatement, as Andy Murray is a British player, and the correct name might be someone like Ashley Barker or another official) stated they are giving Serena as much time as possible to recover. They ruled out postponing the match to later dates unless necessary for safety or tournament flow. The match is expected to take place on a larger court to accommodate the large crowd attracted by Serena and Venus, who are major stars. Serena returned to professional tennis after four years, but she lost her first singles match and injured her knee. She did not attend a press conference afterward due to health reasons and expressed her commitment to participating in the doubles event. Serena and Venus have won six doubles titles together, including a title in 2016.

Illa asks the UME for help to control the fire in the Empordà that has already forced the confinement of the neighbors of several Gerundese populations

A large forest fire has erupted in La Bisbal d'Empordà and Vilavenut, in Girona, Catalonia, prompting President Salvador Illa to request assistance from the Military Emergency Unit (UME). The blaze, which began on Friday morning, has forced residents of several nearby towns into confinement due to smoke and safety concerns. Initial investigations suggest the fire was caused by mechanical work on a road, though this remains under investigation. The fire has affected approximately 250 hectares and is spreading through the Gavarres mountain range, driven by strong winds. Local authorities have ordered the temporary closure of areas including Calonge i Sant Antoni, Castell d'Aro, and others, while firefighters deploy 53 units, including 11 aerial teams, to combat the flames. Over 150 children at a summer camp in La Bisbal d'Empordà were evacuated as a precaution but are reported to be safe. The situation remains active and unpredictable, with forecasts indicating a shift in wind direction that could alter the fire’s spread.

Naomi Osaka dazzles at Wimbledon with a kimono inspired by 'Kill Bill' by Lucy Liu

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka made headlines at Wimbledon by wearing a kimono inspired by the movie 'Kill Bill' during her first-round match against Elsa Jacquemot. Despite Wimbledon's strict all-white dress code, Osaka chose a kimono with flowing sleeves and intricate embroidery, which she said was influenced by Lucy Liu's iconic outfit in the film. Osaka explained that her Japanese heritage is important to her and that she enjoys using fashion to express herself differently on the court. The crowd reacted enthusiastically to her entrance, and Osaka has become known for her creative outfits at major tournaments, including previous appearances at the Australian Open and French Open. Her style choices often draw attention and have become a notable part of her presence in sports events.

Moreno blames the left for the pact with Vox or the electoral repetition in Andalusia: "They have the two votes we lack and have been removed from the middle"

Juanma Moreno, the acting president of Andalucía and candidate for re-election from the Popular Party (PP), has called on other political forces to show 'intelligence and generosity' to avoid institutional deadlock and has held the left-wing parties responsible for any future outcomes, whether through a potential agreement with Vox or the repetition of elections. During his investiture speech, Moreno acknowledged he lacks the majority needed to be formally invested as president and emphasized that two additional votes are required for his appointment next Tuesday. He stated that only Vox is willing to negotiate with the PP, while the Socialist Party, Por Andalucía, and Adelante Andalucía have opted against dialogue, choosing instead to block progress. Moreno warned that if no agreement is reached within two months, new elections would be necessary. He urged swift action to finalize the government by July to ensure the 2027 budget starts on time.

Yugoslavia's footprint as a world champion is being erased

The article discusses the dissolution of Yugoslavia, which officially ended on April 27, 1992, during a period marked by intense conflict and loss of life across the region. The breakup of Slovenia and Croatia led to the fragmentation of a country that was struggling to transition from communism to democracy but instead became embroiled in war. The conflicts resulted in widespread destruction, mass migrations, and the emergence of new states attempting to move past the horrors of the 1990s. The Yugoslav national football team, known as the 'plavi,' played their last World Cup in 1990, and four players who had been born in the former Yugoslavia were still part of the current squad before they were eliminated, marking the end of Yugoslavia's presence in the tournament.
