It was founded in Madrid in 1903 by Torcuato Luca de Tena y Alvarez-Ossorio and published for nearly a century by the family-controlled Prensa Espanola. In 2001 Prensa Espanola merged with the Basque group Grupo Correo to form Vocento, which remains a publicly listed company in which founding families (including descendants of the Luca de Tena, Ybarra and other Basque shareholder families) hold significant blocks.
