Coffee may reduce the risk of liver disease, according to a recent study

A new study suggests that drinking coffee regularly could reduce the risk of developing serious liver diseases, including liver cancer. The research, published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, found that habitual coffee consumption is associated with a lower likelihood of developing severe liver conditions and dying from them. The findings were based on a long-term follow-up of over 354,000 individuals, highlighting the potential protective effects of coffee on liver health. The study tracked participants for more than a decade and found that those who drank coffee regularly had significantly lower risks of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common type of liver cancer, and death related to liver disease. The protective effect appeared to increase with the amount of coffee consumed daily. Compared to non-coffee drinkers, people who consumed one to two cups per day had a 20 percent lower risk of cirrhosis, a 24 percent lower risk of liver cancer, and a 31 percent reduced chance of dying from liver-related causes. For those consuming three to four cups of coffee daily, the risk reduction reached 35 percent for both cirrhosis and liver cancer, while the probability of death linked to liver disease dropped by 41 percent. Individuals who drank five or more cups per day saw their risk of liver cancer decrease by 47 percent, cirrhosis risk drop by 32 percent, and mortality from liver disease fall by 42 percent. Hyunseok Kim, a hepatologist and lead author of the study from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, noted that the benefits of coffee for the liver appear to go beyond caffeine. He emphasized that the study likely represents the most comprehensive long-term data on the impact of coffee on liver health. Kim explained that the observed benefits were similar among consumers of both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, suggesting that the protective effects might be due to other components in coffee, such as its antioxidant properties. In addition to analyzing medical records, researchers examined magnetic resonance imaging scans and blood biomarkers for a subset of participants. These tests revealed that regular coffee drinkers had less fat accumulation and inflammation in the liver, along with healthier profiles of liver proteins. However, the study noted that the benefits were slightly diminished for those who added sugar or sweeteners to their coffee. In fact, individuals who used sweeteners showed higher levels of a marker indicating liver inflammation, which could contribute to the development of fatty liver disease. Despite these promising results, the researchers acknowledged limitations in the study. Coffee consumption was measured only at the beginning of the study and again during MRI scans after more than ten years, meaning participants' habits might have changed over time. Additionally, more than 90 percent of the volunteers were of European descent, and only a fraction underwent imaging studies. Kim pointed out that further research is needed to confirm these findings in more diverse populations. The study adds to growing evidence that coffee may offer multiple health benefits beyond its well-known role in boosting alertness. While the exact mechanisms behind its protective effects remain under investigation, the findings suggest that incorporating coffee into daily routines could have positive implications for liver health. Researchers plan to conduct additional studies to explore how different types of coffee and additives affect these outcomes.
