Explosions echo near where Macron is staying during a visit to Damascus
Two explosions were reported near the French President Emmanuel Macron's accommodation in Damascus, Syria, close to the Ministry of Tourism headquarters. Local media reported that the blasts were caused by multiple explosive devices detonating around a hotel, though there are currently no reports of casualties or damage extent. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident. Macron arrived in Syria on Monday during his first visit by a Western European leader since the new Syrian authorities took power. The Syrian state news agency SANA stated that Macron was visiting with a business delegation to discuss regional security, economic opportunities, and investments. At the airport, he was welcomed by Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shibani. In a statement on X, Macron expressed commitment to the Syrian people and emphasized support for an independent, unified Syria in peace with its neighbors.
