Eduardo Sacheri explained on social media his viral political statements: "I'm sorry to disappoint you"

Eduardo Sacheri, the Argentine writer and history professor known for his novel El secreto de sus ojos, which was adapted into a successful film by Juan José Campanella and won an Academy Award in 2010, issued a clarification on social media regarding recent political remarks that had gone viral. In a post on the platform formerly known as X, Sacheri stated, “I regret to disillusion you.” The statement followed criticism from writers, historians, and journalists over his comments during a live-streamed interview with journalist Reynaldo Sietecase. During the interview, part of the show Enemigos del Rey, Sacheri discussed his trilogy of novels centered around the Falklands War, which will conclude this year with the release of his latest book. He also spoke about his historical works from the 19th century. In response to President Javier Milei’s economic policies, Sacheri claimed that Milei is attempting an economic opening more coherent than that of former president Carlos Menem. He noted that the debate between a more liberal or protectionist economy has not been prominent in Argentina throughout much of the 20th century. According to Sacheri, there is a growing portion of the population that views the liberal alternative more favorably. Sacheri recently published Los días de la Constitución (Alfaguara, $44.999), his third book on Argentine history. He emphasized that politicians in the 19th century shared a common vision, far greater than current political leaders. During the conversation, Sacheri acknowledged that some supporters of Milei may hold conservative views culturally, but he believes Milei does not share these interests. He pointed to a shift in ideological paradigms concerning economic openness. In addition to his literary work, Sacheri expressed that the reclaiming of sovereignty over the Falklands and the national football team represent the few truly cross-cutting issues in Argentina. Any discourse that departs from these themes is met with skepticism. Sacheri belongs to a small group of Argentine authors whose books consistently achieve high sales. He further remarked that there is little fiction written about the Falklands conflict in Argentina. “For me, there is very little; it's a topic we talk about little: the war, not the Falklands,” he reflected. He and Sietecase attributed the military’s loss of power and the trial of the Juntas to the defeat in the armed conflict. In his social media message, Sacheri clarified that he rarely expresses his political opinions publicly because he considers them irrelevant. A recent inaccurate portrayal of him as aligned with the Milei administration prompted his clarification. He reiterated that he does not support the most voted political projects in Argentina in recent years, neither the Milei movement nor Kirchnerism. His sole solid emotional allegiance in politics is to Raúl Alfonsín, whom he has previously mentioned. If critics wish to disagree with him based on this sentiment toward Alfonsín, he said, it is entirely legitimate. For more contemporary affiliations, he apologized for any confusion and wished to clarify his stance. The author concluded his message by requesting that readers refrain from commenting. On Thursday, April 27, the theatrical adaptation of Lo mucho que te amé, written by Corina Fiorillo, Belén Brito, and Sacheri himself, will premiere at the Sala Luisa Vehil of the Teatro Cervantes.
