Durão Barroso calls for Europe to stop being 'the geopolitical teenager it has been'

During the first day of parliamentary sessions of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in Cascais, former European Commission President and Prime Minister José Manuel Durão Barroso delivered a speech assessing the state of international order and the role of Europe. Addressing an audience composed mainly of PSD and CDS leaders, he criticized the EU's current geopolitical posture, calling it 'the adolescent geopolitical entity it has been.' He highlighted global instability caused by tensions between the US, China, and Russia, technological revolution, energy crisis, climate change, and demographic challenges. Durão Barroso argued that Europe needs to become more proactive and take greater responsibility for its security, rather than being reactive. He emphasized the need for decisive action before crises reach critical levels, citing past successes like responding to sovereign debt crises and the pandemic but criticizing a tendency toward procrastination. He also urged Portugal to strengthen its Euro-Atlantic orientation.
