Dubai saves tourism: 700 euros for residents who bring guests

Dubai has launched a new initiative aimed at reviving its tourism sector amid the ongoing regional conflict. The campaign, named “Dubai Invites,” encourages residents to bring their relatives and friends to the city, offering them incentives worth over 3,000 dirhams (approximately 700 euros). The program runs from July 20 to October 31, with participants required to register guests through the official online platform. Upon confirmation of arrival, residents can access benefits such as discounts on accommodation, free or discounted entry to attractions, and special offers at restaurants. Each resident can receive up to three packages during the campaign, one per group of visitors. The move comes as part of Dubai’s broader strategy to maintain its position as one of the world's top tourist destinations despite the challenges posed by the war in the Middle East. Last year, the city welcomed around 19.5 million tourists, making it a key destination on the region’s tourism map. However, the war between Iran and the United States has further impacted the sector. Although the UAE was not directly involved in the conflict, Iranian missile and drone attacks have damaged several hotels, including those on Palm Jumeirah and the iconic Burj Al Arab. As a result, many tourists have canceled trips, and hotels have increasingly relied on domestic visitors. To support the tourism industry, the Dubai government announced a financial aid package valued at over 400 million U.S. dollars in May. This includes exemptions from municipal fees for hotels and restaurants, reduced penalties for customs violations, and lower charges for civil aviation permits. An initial package of over 270 million dollars was approved in March. These measures aim to stabilize the sector and encourage both local and international visitors to return. Despite these efforts, travel conditions remain challenging. While Dubai’s airports operate at full capacity, some airlines based in the UAE continue to adjust their operations due to security concerns in the region. Flights to destinations such as Kuwait and Bahrain are still subject to delays, rerouting, or temporary suspensions, depending on security assessments and airspace restrictions, according to Gulf News. Travelers are advised to check flight statuses before departure and arrive at the airport at least three hours early, as security, border, and immigration procedures could take longer than usual. Potential disruptions in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz could also affect fuel prices and travel logistics. In addition to economic measures, Dubai is leveraging its residents as ambassadors for the city. Noor Al Geziri, deputy director for special projects and the Middle East and North Africa region at the Department of Economic Diversification, emphasized that the initiative reflects Dubai’s ambition to remain one of the best cities for visits, living, and working. She noted that the campaign supports the goals of the UAE’s family-friendly year, which aims to enhance social cohesion and community engagement. As the campaign unfolds, officials hope it will help restore confidence in Dubai as a safe and welcoming destination. With continued diplomatic efforts and adjustments to travel protocols, the city aims to attract both returning and new visitors, ensuring the sustainability of its tourism-driven economy.
