A tale of betrayal among women

The release of Saša Božič’s novel *Pogumno* marks another significant chapter in contemporary Slovenian literature, offering readers a deeply personal and philosophical exploration of female relationships, trust, and betrayal. The book, part of the trilogy *Verjemi. Pogumno. Biti*, centers on the protagonist Tio, who embarks on a journey of self-discovery amid loss, old wounds, and the question of whether she can remain faithful to herself despite life's trials. Through her narrative, Božič delves into how friendships, rivalries, jealousy, and disappointments shape our identities, while also highlighting the power of trust, forgiveness, and mutual support among women. Her central message is clear: true strength in women does not come from competition but from community. As Božič explains, “When we know our worth, we have no need for competition. Then we can genuinely cheer for one another.”

The novel took years to complete, as Božič worked through personal experiences that informed its themes. She describes writing as a form of healing, explaining that when life lessons coalesce into a meaningful whole, they must be shared. This sentiment underscores the emotional depth of *Pogumno*, which was released during the summer solstice, a time traditionally associated with renewal and transformation. To celebrate the novel’s launch, the Jnana Theatre, under the direction of Dr. Nane Šumrada Slavnič, organized an evening event that blended literature, theater, music, and community engagement. Attendees were invited to experience a performance that reflected the novel’s core message—that some of the most profound transformations in life occur within relationships, hope, and mutual support.

The event featured contributions from notable figures, including internationally recognized dancer and gymnast Brigita Krašovec and television presenter Vesna Gombač. The success of the novel has also been supported by a range of prominent individuals, including longtime journalist Barbara Jerman, TV host Klara Eva Kukovič, makeup artist and entrepreneur Martina Vrhovnik, founder of the Ecocivilization movement, former European Commissioner and deputy prime minister Dr. Violeta Bulc, Dr. Sonja Praprotnik, owner of publishing house Chiara Simona Hana Boc, and many others. Their endorsement highlights the cultural significance of *Pogumno* and its resonance with broader societal conversations about women’s roles and resilience.

Božič, known for her seven published books, is also a mentor, founder of the Sophia Academy, and president of the G100 Indigenous Communities and Integration wing. Her work intertwines personal growth, ancient wisdom, and modern challenges faced by women. She views her novels not just as stories but as invitations for dialogue on topics still rarely discussed openly, and as spaces where readers can recognize parts of their own lives in the narratives of others.

The novel’s release coincides with a broader trend in Slovenian literature that emphasizes introspection, social commentary, and the intersection of personal and collective identity. While *Pogumno* focuses on the internal struggles and relationships of its characters, other works such as Borut Kraševč’s *Dan spomina* explore historical contexts and complex family dynamics, reflecting the diverse voices shaping Slovenia’s literary landscape.
