Preventing Diabetes - How the Garden Can Lower the Risk

Two recent observational studies highlight the health benefits of natural environments in residential areas, particularly regarding the prevention of Type-2 diabetes. The first study, published in BMC Public Health, analyzed data from 423,282 participants in the UK Biobank who did not have diabetes at the start of the study. Over a follow-up period of around 15 years, researchers found that individuals living in areas with more private garden space had a seven percent lower risk of developing Type-2 diabetes compared to those with less green space. This effect was most pronounced among socially disadvantaged individuals and those without a family history of diabetes. The second study, published in the Journal of Public and Environmental Health, found that natural sounds like bird songs, wind, and rain were perceived as pleasant and were associated with stronger attachment to one’s place of residence. Both studies emphasize the importance of accessibility, diversity, and everyday proximity to nature in promoting health and well-being, while also pointing out social inequalities in access to natural environments.
