Delegation of Valparaíso addresses proposal by Christ the Redeemer and aims for a binational appointment in September

The Delegation of Valparaíso has begun discussing proposals related to the Cristo Redentor International Border Crossing, with plans for a bilateral meeting in September. The discussion follows a proposal by Argentine Governor Alfredo Cornejo to change the system used to keep the crossing open during severe weather conditions. From Mendoza, officials have suggested that Argentina and Chile jointly issue an international tender to hire a specialized company responsible for clearing the route. The proposal emerged after the crossing remained closed for over 30 days due to heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions in high mountain areas. In response, the Delegation informed that a bilateral meeting will take place in Buenos Aires on September 7 and 8, where issues related to the border crossing and reciprocal conditions of both border complexes will be addressed. Regarding Cornejo’s suggestion that the provincial government of Mendoza should have greater authority over decisions regarding the border crossing, the Delegation stated that this is an internal policy matter for Argentina and therefore they would not comment on it. On the possibility of implementing a joint concession model for the international route between both crossings, the Delegation indicated that this matter must be discussed at the national level between both governments, considering its potential implementation and effectiveness. The Delegation also highlighted the work of the Road Maintenance authorities, describing them as highly competent and specialized in maintaining the road. According to the statement, the route was reopened in record time despite several meters of snow, stretches of kilometers, and winds exceeding 180 kilometers per hour. It was noted that at different levels, there has been a push toward more permanent conservation of the international road, a scenario in which Road Maintenance could coexist with a concession through complementary functions. In October, according to the statement, maintenance works on the tunnel and eight kilometers of road will begin. Finally, the Delegation addressed avalanche management, calling it a common challenge. They mentioned that the Army collaborates in this function, but that currently there is no legislation addressing this risk. This point was identified as one of the lessons learned from the recent snowstorms and must be addressed at the national level or between both governments. The Delegation emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to ensure the safety and efficiency of the international corridor. With the upcoming bilateral meeting, both sides aim to find solutions that enhance the resilience of the crossing against future extreme weather events. The discussions reflect ongoing concerns about infrastructure sustainability and the importance of cross-border cooperation in managing shared resources and risks.
